Verification validation

Verification and validation are instruments to ensure the quality of modelling. Verification particularly focuses on the technical aspect ensuring that the programmed model behaves as intended.Validation focuses on the accuracy of the final simulation model which should reflect the behaviour of the corresponding real-world system sufficiently precisely. The verification and validation process (V V process) intends to establish confidence of the managers in the developed simulation model such that the final simulation model can be used for resolving the system s initial deficiencies efficiently. [Pg.167]

In the V V process, various techniques are available relying on the comparison of a [Pg.167]

The criteria used for V V can be qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative criteria involve a subjective assessment on the logic or similarity of the tested model. In contrast, quantitative criteria measure the similarity or consistency by a numerical comparison of a reference value from the reference system with a (calculated) test value obtained from the tested model.i Table 4.8 shows examples of V V techniques according to the categorization criteria discussed. [Pg.168]

quantitative extreme value test statistical techniques [Pg.168]

These techniques are more or less applicable for the different V V activities. For verifying the implemented simulation model, software engineering techniques are most widely used which refer to the techniques displayed in the upper left cell in Table 4.8. Cause-effect-diagrams visualize relations between events and system outcomes. They can be compared with commonly accepted assumptions about relations between events and system outcomes to detect unintended model behaviour. Similarly, animation and trace analysis often help modellers and managers to check the plausibility of the model s behaviour over time. However, not aU programming mistakes uncover themselves in an animation or in the analysed traces. Moreover, rare events are hard to detect since animation is applied for rather short time frames and trace analysis is applied for a [Pg.168]

Part of the confusion surrounding the model testing and validation process is largely because different meanings have been attached to the terms calibration, verification, validation, and post-audit in the technical literature. Risks to the application and reliance on models must also be addressed. A rigorous verification, validation, and accreditation process will help to assure that the models and simulations are properly used for the intended applications. This process should be employed throughout the life cycle of the codes. For example, models that may be acaedited for use at certain research level applications might not be approved for manufacturing scale applications. ... [Pg.114]

This integration will require the development and implonentation of living property databases. Entities are dynamically modified and more information become available and existing data are updated. Keepers of these databases must be concerned with an equally dynamic capability to provide timely verification, validation, and certification of these data. It is not just having access to the most recent data that is important, but rather to have access to the most recent certified data that will provide the greatest confidence among groups to share information. [Pg.116]
