Venereal diseases

The path from squalene (114) to the corresponding oxide and thence to lanosterol [79-63-0] (126), C qH qO, cholesterol [57-88-5] (127), and cycloartenol [469-38-5] (128) (Fig. 6) has been demonstrated in nonphotosynthetic organisms. It has not yet been demonstrated that there is an obligatory path paralleling the one known for generation of plant sterols despite the obvious stmctural relationships of, for example, cycloartenol (128), C qH qO, to cyclobuxine-D (129), C25H42N2O. The latter, obtained from the leaves of Buxus sempervirens E., has apparentiy found use medicinally for many disorders, from skin and venereal diseases to treatment of malaria and tuberculosis. In addition to cyclobuxine-D [2241-90-9] (129) from the Buxaceae, steroidal alkaloids are also found in the Solanaceae, Apocynaceae, and LiUaceae. 

L-Dopa and Trimethoprim are two other dmgs that can be made from vanillin. u-Dopa is used for the treatment of Parkinson s disease Trimethoprim is an antiinfective agent used mainly for urinary tract infections and certain venereal diseases. Also, Mebeverine, an antispasmodic agent, and Verazide, a generic antitubercular agent, are dmgs that can be made from vanillin or its derivatives. 

It was treated as a venereal disease, with disastrous results.

Diagnostic procedures include dark-field microscopy12, non-treponemal exams10 (i.e., the Venereal Disease Laboratory and the rapid plasma reagin test), and treponemal exams (i.e., enzyme immunoassay, the T. pallidum hemagglutination test, the fluorescent treponemal antibody test, and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay).

Serologic tests are the mainstay in the diagnosis of syphilis and are categorized as nontreponemal or treponemal. Commonly used nontrep-onemal tests include the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory shde test, the rapid plasma reagin card test, the unheated serum regain test, and the toluidine red unheated serum test. 

Arsphenamin was the first drug substance with thermotropic mesomorphism [19] to be used therapeutically as Salvarsan during the first half of the 19th century. This drug is effective against microorganisms and offered for the first time a therapy for venereal diseases. Today it has been replaced by antibiotics with less serious side effects. 

At the beginning of the twentieth century, before penicillin, bismuth compounds were used to treat some venereal diseases. However, the treatment was generally unsuccessful. 

It is also advisable to tell the study subject that the GP will be informed about the clinical trial. Difficulties occur when the clinical trial is for an indication of a socially unacceptable condition such as a venereal disease. Rightly or wrongly, the subjects have fear that knowledge of the illness may not be safe with the famHY doctor. In these exceptional circumstances, the lEC should decide whether the GP should be informed only with the agreement of the study subject. 

The Venereal Disease Act of 1917 and The Cancer Act of 1939 had already prevented public advertisement and promotion of drugs for these conditions to protect sufferers from inadequate or unsuitable treatment and fraudulent claims (of efficacy). 

A 22-year-old woman had her first prenatal visit. Her physical examination was normal for a woman at 12 weeks gestation. Both the nontreponemal (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) and fluorescent treponemal antibody tests were positive.

Although Forman diagnosed some of his male patients as suffering from venereal diseases, he did not display an interest in conditions specific to men. He did observe male problems, as illustrated by the following note ...

The Court noted that it was unlikely in these relatively enlightened times that any state would attempt to make it a criminal offense for a person to be mentally ill or to be afflicted with a venereal disease. 

Chaparral has been used in the treatment of arthritis, cancer, venereal disease, tuberculosis, bowel cramps, rheumatism, and colds.

Europeans used echinacea to treat diseases such as eczema, veneral diseases, lymphangitis (swelling of the lymph vessels), and sepsis (infection of the blood with microorganisms). 

Tetracyclines are classified as broad-spectrum antibiotics obtained from soil acti-nomycetes. All tetracyclines are slightly bitter solids and are weakly soluble in water. Although tetracyclines develop organism resistance, they are the drugs of first choice in venereal disease, atypical pneumonia, cholera, brucellosis, and plague. Tetracyclines also are used in urinary tract infections, amebiasis, acne, and as prophylaxis against meningitis.
