Substituted phenols such as cresols, p-fcrf-butylphenol, / -phcnylphenol, resorcinol, and cardanol (derived from cashew nut shells) have also been used as precursors for phenolic resins. Phenolic resins also find use in varnishes, electrical insulation, and in other protective coatings. Heat-settings adhesives which are based on phenolics find use in producing plywood. These also find use in the production of ionexchange resins having amine, sulphonic acid, hydroxy or phosphoric acid functional groups. [Pg.165]

Heat-setting resins cannot be plasticized by low molecular weight plasticizers. Polyvinyl acetals have been claimed for these products. American Cyanamid Co. has suggested polyvinyl acetals or butyrals in an amount of 10 to 25% of the resin for urea and melamine resins. For varnishes and adhesives, combinations of phenolic resins and polyvinyl formal are recommended. Polyvinyl acetals with higher alkyl radicals are suitable for cellulose esters and improve elasticity as well as resistance against water. [Pg.100]

Furfuryl alcohol is shipped in bulk or drums. Although not corrosive to metals, it is a powerful solvent and penetrant containers, tanks, lines, and valves need to be in good condition to avoid potential leakage. Furfuryl alcohol can be stored in containers lined with baked phenolic resin coatings however, it should not be put in containers that are coated with lacquers, varnishes, or epoxy resins because it is an excellent solvent for many such coatings. [Pg.80]

Phenolic resins are well known for their contribution in improving hardness, gloss, and water and chemical resistance in oleoresinous varnishes. Those based on p-alkyl-substituted phenols and with heat-reactive methylol groups have also been incorporated into alkyd resins. The reaction has not been well smdied. Presumably, the methylol group would react with the unsaturation functionality on the fatty acid chain to form the chroman stmcture, similar to what is believed to have occurred in the varnish. Etherification between the methylol group and free hydroxyl of the alkyd resin, catalyzed by the residual acidity in the resin, would be another possible reaction. [Pg.3324]

It was not until the commercialization of synthetic plastics resins in the 1930s that an almost unlimited variety of base materials became available for compounding into adhesives and sealants. Most of the thermoplastic resins were soluble in organic solvents and were used as solvent adhesives for molded plastic articles of the same base composition and sometimes for other materials. Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), a thermoplastic developed in 1927, is used today in solvent formulations to bond PVC articles such as coated fabrics, films, foams, and pipe. In the early 1930s, phenolics came into importance as adhesive resins. Before that time they were used as coating varnishes [9, p. 239).
