Coating, phenolic

Phenolic coatings Phenolic is reacted with formaldehyde under heat to form a completely insoluble material. They are usually applied in an alcohol solution by spray, dip or roller. During their curing, they release water, which must be removed. They have maximum chemical and solvent resistance but poor alkaline resistance. [Pg.130]

Epoxy phenolic coatings These materials are also cured at relatively high temperatures and are made by the reaction of the epoxy resin with the phenolic resin. They are slightly less critical in application requirements, are less sensitive to curing conditions and can be applied in thicker coats. The best use for both these materials is as tank linings used for the storage or food products, drinks, etc. or for process plant, evaporators, etc. that contain boiling water. [Pg.130]

Shipment and Storage Specifications. AT-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone is available in tank cars and tank trailers and in dmms of various sizes. Shipping containers are normally steel or stainless steel. Tank cars are provided with heating coils to facilitate unloading in cold weather. Rubber, epoxy, and epoxy—phenolic coatings are attacked and must be avoided. Carbon steel has been successfully used for storage tanks, but stainless steel preserves product quality better. Aluminum and certain phenolic coatings are also satisfactory. [Pg.523]

Shipment, Storage, and Prices. Methyl vinyl ether is available in tank cars or cylinders, while the other vinyl ethers are available in tank cars, tank wagons, or drums. Mild steel, stainless steel, and phenolic-coated steel are suitable for shipment and storage. If protected from air, moisture, and acidic contamination, vinyl ethers are stable for years. United States bulk prices in 1991 for methyl vinyl ether, ethyl vinyl ether, and butyl vinyl ether were listed as about 5.78/kg, 6.28/kg, and 6.08/kg, respectively7. [Pg.116]

Formation of a scale of polymer on the reactor walls is normally less than in corresponding bulk or solution polymerizations. Scale formation is troublesome in PVC suspension polymerizations, however, because the polymer is not soluble in its monomer, and a deposit formed on the wall will not be washed off by fresh monomer. This build-up has to be removed in order to maintain satisfactory heat transfer and prevent inclusion of gelled polymer ( fish eyes ) in the product. Cleanliness of the reactor walls is very important because the productivity of the equipment is enhanced by longer intervals between shutdowns for cleaning. To this end, some phenolic coatings have been designed that inhibit polymer buildup by terminating free-radical reactions on the walls (cf. Section 6.9). [Pg.360]

Acrolein should be stored under an inert atmosphere below 38°C (100.4°F). Steel, ceramic, glass, Teflon, silicone rubber, and containers with baked phenolic coatings are suitable for storage (NFPA 1986). Copper, zinc, or materials of polyethylene or other organic coatings should not be used. Hydroquinone or... [Pg.171]

Late on May 13, it was discovered that a heat exchanger directly upstream of the activated carbon adsorber had failed this was the same heat exchangerthat had failed during the testing at Porton Down. It was subsequently replaced by a system with upgraded materials of construction 316 stainless steel was used in place of 304 stainless steel, and various Heresite baked phenolic coatings were applied to the various parts. [Pg.53]

To provide maximum corrosion resistance a two component phenolic/ epoxy novolac coating can be used. The phenolic coating provides resistance to high concentrations of acids, particularly to sulfuric acid at elevated temperatures. Refer to Table 18.13 for the compatibility of phenolic with selected corrodents. [Pg.423]
