An attempt is made to contribute to the objective analysis of the role of PVC cabling in major fires such as that at Dusseldorf airport. Questions regarding smoke and toxic combustion gas evolved by PVC cable materials have repeatedly been posed. Today, functional fillers such as aluminium hydroxide (ATH) and magnesium hydroxide (MDH) are available to optimise PVC formulations, creating extremely low smoke and much less toxic gases. The latest research developments are illustrated using... [Pg.130]

When you work on an important Excel document, it is a good idea to indicate when the document was last modified. In one of the top cells, you may want to type Last Mo edt , and in the adjacent cell, you can use the =now() or = today() fimetion. Then, each time you access the Excel document, the now() function will automatically update the date and the time the file was last used. So, when you print the sheet, it will show the date and the time. If you use the today() function, it will only update the date. [Pg.384]

Constrained DFT The basic shortcomings of the BS approach can be summarized in two points. In the first place, the spin contamination, or the impossibility to represent the low-spin states with a single Kohn-Sham determinant. The second point is the fact that nearly all todays functionals tend to overestimate the delocalization of the spin density and overestimate the anti ferromagnetic character of the coupling. [Pg.137]

The first requirement is a source of infrared radiation that emits all frequencies of the spectral range being studied. This polychromatic beam is analyzed by a monochromator, formerly a system of prisms, today diffraction gratings. The movement of the monochromator causes the spectrum from the source to scan across an exit slit onto the detector. This kind of spectrometer in which the range of wavelengths is swept as a function of time and monochromator movement is called the dispersive type. [Pg.57]

The previous application — in accord with most MD studies — illustrates the urgent need to further push the limits of MD simulations set by todays computer technology in order to bridge time scale gaps between theory and either experiments or biochemical processes. The latter often involve conformational motions of proteins, which typically occur at the microsecond to millisecond range. Prominent examples for functionally relevant conformatiotial motions... [Pg.88]

Our work is targeted to biomolecular simulation applications, where the objective is to illuminate the structure and function of biological molecules (proteins, enzymes, etc) ranging in size from dozens of atoms to tens of thousands of atoms today, with the desire to increase this limit to millions of atoms in the near future. Such molecular dynamics (MD) simulations simply apply Newton s law to each atom in the system, with the force on each atom being determined by evaluating the gradient of the potential field at each atom s position. The potential includes contributions from bonding forces. [Pg.459]

Many of the molecular modelling force fields in use today for molecular systems can be interpreted in terms of a relatively simple four-component picture of the intra- and inter-molecular forces within the system. Energetic penalties are associated with the deviation of bonds and angles away from their reference or equilibrium values, there is a function... [Pg.183]

Chapter 10 represented a wave function as a linear combination of Gaussian basis functions. Today, there are so many basis sets available that many researchers will never need to modify a basis set. However, there are occasionally times when it is desirable to extend an existing basis set in order to obtain more accurate results. The savvy researcher also needs to be able to understand the older literature, in which basis sets were customized routinely. [Pg.231]

Some scientific studies indicate that the gam in performance obtained through the use of anabolic steroids is small This may be a case though in which the anecdotal evidence of the athletes may be closer to the mark than the scientific studies The scientific studies are done under ethical conditions in which patients are treated with prescription level doses of steroids A 240 pound offensive tackle ( too small by todays standards) may take several ana bolic steroids at a time at 10-20 times their pre scribed doses in order to weigh the 280 pounds he (or his coach) feels is necessary The price athletes pay for gams in size and strength can be enormous This price includes emotional costs (friendships lost because of heightened aggressiveness) sterility testicular atro phy (the testes cease to function once the body starts to obtain a sufficient supply of testosterone like steroids from outside) and increased risk of prema ture death from liver cancer or heart disease... [Pg.1099]

The source requited for aes is an electron gun similar to that described above for electron microscopy. The most common electron source is thermionic in nature with a W filament which is heated to cause electrons to overcome its work function. The electron flux in these sources is generally proportional to the square of the temperature. Thermionic electron guns are routinely used, because they ate robust and tehable. An alternative choice of electron gun is the field emission source which uses a large electric field to overcome the work function barrier. Field emission sources ate typically of higher brightness than the thermionic sources, because the electron emission is concentrated to the small area of the field emission tip. Focusing in both of these sources is done by electrostatic lenses. Today s thermionic sources typically produce spot sizes on the order of 0.2—0.5 p.m with beam currents of 10 A at 10 keV. If field emission sources ate used, spot sizes down to ca 10—50 nm can be achieved. [Pg.283]

Programmable Logic Controllers The programmable logic controller (PLC) originated as a solid-state replacement for the hardwired relay control panel and was first used in the automotive indus-tiy for discrete manufacturing control. Today, PLCs are used to implement Boolean logic functions, timers, counters, and some math functions and PID control. PLCs are often used with on/off process control valves. [Pg.775]

Present-day nomenclature is partly the result of the conflict and interplay of two functions the need to communicate in speech and on the printed page on the one hand, and the need for archival storage of information and its efficient, reliable retrieval. The former function came first, and laid the basis for the nomenclature most commonly used even today, and gave birth to a wealth of trivial names (i.e. names that give little or no information on structure). These were often coined on the basis of the origin of the substance, as in the case of collidine, obtained from distillation of bones in glue factories, or were derived from a special characteristic, as in the case of skatole, which has a fecal odor. Such names are short and generally euphonious, but they must be memorized they cannot be deduced from the structure. [Pg.8]

The first six chapters of this book deal with the basic principles of protein structure as we understand them today, and examples of the different major classes of protein structures are presented. Chapter 7 contains a brief discussion on DNA structures with emphasis on recognition by proteins of specific nucleotide sequences. The remaining chapters illustrate how during evolution different structural solutions have been selected to fulfill particular functions. [Pg.4]

Today, one has many choices in the area of controller-integrated circuits. One must decide early in the design process how much functionality and integration... [Pg.70]

This converter is intended to function as a bulk power supply for a distributed system. It has only one +28VDC output at 10 A. This is going to be a classic ZVS quasi-resonant half-bridge converter that is, variable frequency, voltagemode controlled with averaging overcurrent protection. It is representative of the designs using the available control ICs on the market today. [Pg.176]

In his early survey of computer experiments in materials science , Beeler (1970), in the book chapter already cited, divides such experiments into four categories. One is the Monte Carlo approach. The second is the dynamic approach (today usually named molecular dynamics), in which a finite system of N particles (usually atoms) is treated by setting up 3A equations of motion which are coupled through an assumed two-body potential, and the set of 3A differential equations is then solved numerically on a computer to give the space trajectories and velocities of all particles as function of successive time steps. The third is what Beeler called the variational approach, used to establish equilibrium configurations of atoms in (for instance) a crystal dislocation and also to establish what happens to the atoms when the defect moves each atom is moved in turn, one at a time, in a self-consistent iterative process, until the total energy of the system is minimised. The fourth category of computer experiment is what Beeler called a pattern development... [Pg.468]

Pressure sensitive labels and tapes for the consumer markets form a very significant portion of the PSA industry. Whereas the original products were rather simple in construction and use, today s products often perform unique functions that result from more sophisticated assembly of a label or tape product. Examples of these unique functions include the monitoring of food or drug storage conditions, or the ability to monitor the charge status of a battery. [Pg.522]

Toxicology often provides the basis for a number of regulations aimed at protecting workers from potentially harmful effects. Today, more than ever before, toxicology has a preventive function that provides information on chemicals that can be used safely. It is difficult to imagine occupational or other safety regulations without a major input from toxicology. [Pg.249]

Today occupants, building owners, and other end users of ventilation systems are more interested in the level of air quality and thermal climate than in the techniques by which that level is achieved. This is supported by the fact that industrial ventilation system.s in modern premises are more complicated and tightly integrated with the process and building automation. It is therefore difficult for end users or nonprofessionals to evaluate whether a ventilation system is functioning correctly. [Pg.398]
