Hot-melt thermoplastic elastomer systems (23. 24) are also effective coating materials. These materials are generally based on copolymers that are comprised of hard (crystalline or glassy) and rubbery (amorphous) segments contained in separate phases. The hard-phase regions form physical cross-links below their crystallization or vitrification temperature, and the system therefore has elastomeric properties. The moduli and low-temperature characteristics of these materials can be tailored to compare reasonably well with silicone rubbers at -40 C. However, they are limited in high-temperature applicability because of enhanced creep or flow due to softening. [Pg.921]

Urethanes are processed as mbber-like elastomers, cast systems, or thermoplastic elastomers. The elastomer form is mixed and processed on conventional mbber mills and internal mixers, and can be compression, transfer, or injection molded. The Hquid prepolymers are cast using automatic metered casting machines, and the thermoplastic peUets are processed like aU thermoplastic materials on traditional plastic equipment. The unique property of the urethanes is ultrahigh abrasion resistance in moderately high Shore A (75—95) durometers. In addition, tear, tensUe, and resistance to many oUs is very high. The main deficiencies of the urethanes are their resistance to heat over 100°C and that shear and sliding abrasion tend to make the polymers soft and gummy. [Pg.234]

Thermoplastic elastomers are often multiphase compositions in which the phases are intimately dispersed. In many cases, the phases are chemically bonded by block or graft copolymerization. In others, a fine dispersion is apparentiy sufficient. In these multiphase systems, at least one phase consists of a material that is hard at room temperature but becomes fluid upon heating. Another phase consists of a softer material that is mbberlike at RT. A simple stmcture is an A—B—A block copolymer, where A is a hard phase and B an elastomer, eg, poly(styrene- -elastomer- -styrene). [Pg.11]
