Network systems

Utility companies have a power system network including large generating plants, overhead transmission lines, power substations which reduce transmission line voltages to distribution line voltages, and over-head/underground distribution lines which carry power to the end users (such as a production facility). [Pg.494]

In view of the variable levels of carbonic acid produced throughout the average steam-condensate system network, in order to provide adequate neutralization coverage, it is generally necessary to provide a blend of amines. [Pg.516]

All aspects, including application, operating system, network hardware, etc., must be considered in determining the nature of electronic systems. As indicated above, the main difference between an open and a closed system is simply access. If you have a chromatography data system that operates within your department, the system is closed. The system is closed even if the IT Department runs the server and maintains the network. The system remains closed even if you outsource the IT support to a third-party provider, provided no other company s work interferes with yours. [Pg.1064]

Technical audits of SCADA devices and networks are critical to ongoing security effectiveness. Many commercial and open-source security tools are available that allow system administrators to conduct audits of their systems/networks to identify active services, patch level, and common vulnerabilities. The use of these tools will not solve systemic problems, but will eliminate the paths of least resistance that an attacker could exploit. Analyze identified vulnerabilities to determine their significance, and take corrective actions as appropriate. Track corrective actions and analyze this information to identify trends. Additionally, retest systems after corrective actions have been taken to ensure that vulnerabilities were actually eliminated. Scan nonproduction environments actively to identify and address potential problems. [Pg.131]

While other applications, such as firewalls and anti-virus software, share similar objectives with network intrusion systems, network intrusion systems provide a deeper layer of protection beyond the capabilities of these other systems because they evaluate patterns of computer activity rather than specific files. [Pg.211]

An important aspect of our AI application is the attention paid to including well-established Fortran programs and database search methods into the decision structure of an expert system network. Only certain AI software tools (such as TIMM) effectively handle this critical aspect for the analytical instrumentation field at this time (57-60)> The ability to combine symbolic and numeric processing appears to be a major factor in development of multilevel expert systems for practical instrumentation use. Therefore, the expert systems in the EXMAT linked network access factor values and the decisions from EXMATH, an expert system with chemometric/Fortran routines which are appropriate to the nature of the instrumental data and the information needed by the analyst. Pattern recognition and correlation methods are basic capabilities in this field. [Pg.367]

The hydrogen strategy is to focus on distributed hydrogen related energy systems, network with international activities (EU, lEA, Nordic), and connect with fuel cell activities in Finland. Finland s fuel cell strategy is a bit more developed, with plans to focus on systems, fuel cell demonstrations and applications, build a close relationship with industry to create a national fuel cell group, and network with international fuel cell initiatives. [Pg.125]

Transient — Subcycle disturbance in the AC waveform evidenced by a sharp, brief discontinuity of the waveform. This may be of either polarity and may be additive or subtractive from the nominal waveform. Transients occur when there is a sudden change in the voltage or the current in a power system. Transients are short-duration events, the characteristics of which are predominantly determined by the resistance, inductance, and capacitance of the power system network at the point of interest. The primary characteristics that define a transient are the peak amplitude, the rise time, the fall time, and the frequency of oscillation. Figure 1.12 shows a transient voltage waveform at the output of a power transformer as the result of switching-in of a motor containing power factor correction capacitors. [Pg.19]

Ensure that security access procedures are reviewed and require client company authorization of system network and system access. Audits should be conducted to ensure that security procedures are adhered to. [Pg.862]

Currently a number of issues, such as robustness of biological systems, network structures and dynamics, and applications to drug discovery are actively investigated. This is allowed by significant advances in science and technology to explore how biological component function as a network at sub-cellular, cellular, tissue or organism levels. [Pg.279]

If you don t have updated files at present for any unsupported hardware, you can still continue with the install but will have to update the files before the hardware will function under Windows 2000. If the functioning of the hardware is essential to the operation of the system (network card, video card, etc.) you may want to stop the install and get the new drivers before continuing. For non-essential hardware such as a DVD decoder, you can continue and simply fix the problem later, but it is a good idea to at least verify that the hardware is compatible with Windows 2000, just so you won t be surprised later. [Pg.602]
