Structural developments

At higher temperatures, deposits tend to be columnar (Fig. 2.13 a and b) as a result of uninterrupted grain growth toward the reactant source. The structure is also often dependent on the thickness of the deposit. For instance, grain size will increase as the thickness increases. A columnar-grain structure develops, which becomes more pronounced as the film becomes thicker. [Pg.63]

A polymer is a large molecule built up from numerous smaller molecules. These large molecules may be linear, slightly branched, or highly interconnected. In the latter case the structure develops into a large three-dimensional network. [Pg.1]

From the two-dimensional, graphite-like clusters, the extension to three-dimensional structures is obvious. Symmetric structures developed in a similar fashion to the planar systems would grow in three dimensions with increasing N, and the number of atoms would increase faster. In this work clusters of T symmetry were studied, resembling a small fragment of a diamond structure. Only systems with saturated external bonds were considered. The number of carbon and hydrogen atoms in such a structure is given by... [Pg.42]

The flow of matter and energy through an open system allows the system to self-organize, and to transfer entropy to the environment. This is the basis of the theory of dissipative structures, developed by Ilya Prigogine. He noted that self-organization can only occur far away from thermodynamic equilibrium [17]. [Pg.189]

The physical properties of automotive enamels are in large part determined by the crosslink structure developed in the paint films during the baking process. Enamels which are not cured sufficiently (undercured) are generally sensitive to humidity and solvents. In addition, they may be prone to chipping and cold cracking. Faints which have been baked excessively (overcured) exhibit intercoat adhesion failure. That is, subsequent coats... [Pg.256]
