Copolymers types

Synthesis and mechanical and morphological characterization of (AB)n, ABA and BAB type copolymers of m-phenylene-isophthalamide and polydimethylsiloxane have been reported241 242>. The effect of copolymer type, chemical composition and segment molecular weights on phase separation and the solution behavior of these systems have also been discussed.

Solution polymerisation can yield random, di-block, tri-block or multi-block copolymers. It is important to note that the tri-block, or multi-block copolymers, belong to that class of material termed thermoplastic elastomers and it is only the random copolymer types that are considered here.

Saturated copolymer types are much more stable to atmospheric degradation than those with unsaturations, both in the backbone and in the side chains.

Olvera de la Cruz and Sanchez [76] were first to report theoretical calculations concerning the phase stability of graft and miktoarm AnBn star copolymers with equal numbers of A and B branches. The static structure factor S(q) was calculated for the disordered phase (melt) by expanding the free energy, in terms of the Fourier transform of the order parameter. They applied path integral methods which are equivalent to the random phase approximation method used by Leibler. For the copolymers considered S(q) had the functional form S(q) 1 = (Q(q)/N)-2% where N is the total number of units of the copolymer chain, % the Flory interaction parameter and Q a function that depends specifically on the copolymer type. S(q) has a maximum at q which is determined by the equation dQ/dQ=0. 

Polyvinyl acetate emulsions for manual application in the production of adhesive bound books were examined for stability. It was found, among other things, that plasticized homopolymers had poor or moderate stability, while copolymer types showed very high stability. The addition of calcium carbonate and calcium acetate could improve the lasting qualities of unstable materials but had little effect on the very stable ones. The addition of these buffering agents made the adhesive less acid and less damaging to papers (6). 

The number of copolymer types accessible in this way is only limited by the number of monomers able to polymerize by the living anionic mechanism. Similarly block copolymers can also be formed by living cationic polymerization [274-276],...
