Block copolymers are closer to blends of homopolymers in properties, but without the latter s tendency to undergo phase separation. As a matter of fact, diblock copolymers can be used as surfactants to bind immiscible homopolymer blends together and thus improve their mechanical properties. Block copolymers are generally prepared by sequential addition of monomers to living polymers, rather than by depending on the improbable rjr2 > 1 criterion in monomers. 

Covalent synthesis of complex molecules involves the reactive assembly of many atoms into subunits with aid of reagents and estabUshed as well as innovative reaction pathways. An interesting intermediate 30 was proposed to result from the sequential addition of pyridine to tetrachlorocyclopropene (31). One of the most striking features of the common fatty adds is that they have an even number of carbon atoms (Table 27.1, p. 1062). Several pathways have been explored for their synthesis sequential addition of monomers to an initiator solution, reaction between co-functional polymers and more recently site transformation techniques. Each of these methods has advantages and drawbacks. 

Sequential addition of monomers 6 7-26-27-114) is the most obvious procedure. Once the first monomer has been polymerized, the resulting living species is used as a polymeric initiator for the polymerization of the second one. The monomers are to be added in the order of increasing electron affinity to provide efficient and fast initiation 26 U4). This condition is rather restrictive, and the number of monomer systems that can be used is limited (Table 5). Moreover, when the second monomer contains an electrophilic function (e.g. ester) which could lead to side reactions, it is necessary to first lower the nucleophilicity of the living site. This is best done by intermediate addition of 1.1-diphenylethylene25). The stabilized diphenylmethyl anions do not get involved in side reactions with ester functions, while initiation is still quantitative and fast.

An alternate way to make block copolymers involving PDMS blocks 124,125) is to have these chains fitted with epoxide functions at chain end, and to react them with a vinylic or dienic polymer carrying terminal COOH functions. A useful synthesis of polysubstituted pyridines (i.e., 11) is based on the legioselective addition of Uthiated -enaminophosphonates to unsaturated carbonyl compounds. These pyridines can also be obtained via a one-pot reaction from metalated phosphonates and sequential addition of nitriles and unsaturated caibonyl compounds <96TL(37)4577>.

The formation of the PIC described above is based on the sequential addition of purified components in in vitro experiments. An essential feature of this model is that the assembly takes place on the DNA template.
