The nephrotoxic mode of action of tetrafluoroethylene is similar to that of hexachloro-butadiene. It is first metabolized to a cysteine conjugate, which is metabolized by cysteine conjugate /l-lyase to a reactive product that can bind to cellular macromolecules. [Pg.278]

Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), also known as perfluoroethylene, is a colorless, flammable, toxic gas. It is the monomer used for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is sold under the DuPont tradename of Teflon. TFE is co-polymerized with other compounds to produce a variety of Teflons. TFE is produced by heating chlorodifluoromethane (CHC1F2, Freon-22) or trifluoromethane (CldF3, Freon-23). TFE is used almost exclusively as a monomer in the production of PTFE. PTFE is a vinyl polymer, which means it is made from a monomer with carbon-carbon double bonds. PTFE is made from TFE by free radical polymerization. [Pg.275]

Teflon is best known for its use in cookware, but its use in this area followed original industrial applications in gaskets, sealers, tape, and electrical insulation. These applications were a direct result of the use of PTFE for military purposes during World War II. [Pg.276]


A number of friction studies have been carried out on organic polymers in recent years. Coefficients of friction are for the most part in the normal range, with values about as expected from Eq. XII-5. The detailed results show some serious complications, however. First, n is very dependent on load, as illustrated in Fig. XlI-5, for a copolymer of hexafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene [31], and evidently the area of contact is determined more by elastic than by plastic deformation. The difference between static and kinetic coefficients of friction was attributed to transfer of an oriented film of polymer to the steel rider during sliding and to low adhesion between this film and the polymer surface. Tetrafluoroethylene (Telfon) has a low coefficient of friction, around 0.1, and in a detailed study, this lower coefficient and other differences were attributed to the rather smooth molecular profile of the Teflon molecule [32]. [Pg.441]

Tetrafluoroethylene. Emulsion polymerisation of tetrafluoroethylene, catalysed by oxygen, yields polytetrafluoroethylene (Tejlon) as a very tough horn-hke material of high melting point. It possesses excellent electrical insulation properties and a remarkable inertness towards all chemical reagents, including aqua regia. [Pg.1015]
