Tetrafluoroethylene radiolysis

Temperature dependence (related to the temperature dependence of the conformational structure and the morphology of polymers) of the radiation effect on various fluoropolymers e.g., poly (tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene), poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoroalkylvinylether), and poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-ethylene) copolymers has been reported by Tabata [419]. Hill et al. [420] have investigated the effect of environment and temperature on the radiolysis of FEP. While the irradiation is carried out at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of FEP, cross-linking reactions predominate over chain scission or degradation. Forsythe et al. [421]... 

They were the first to synthesize (FCO—)2 and CF3OCFO. They also found that CO added to CF30 radicals. The radiolysis-induced oxidation has been emphasized by Mele, Lenzi, and their co-workers at the University of Rome, Italy. Apparently they were the first to isolate and characterize tetrafluoroethylene oxide. Gozzo and his co-workers at Milan, Italy, examined the photochemical and low-temperature thermal oxidation of C2F4. 

With fluoro-compounds, there has been work on the radiolysis of fluorinated methanes , hexafluoroethane , tetrafluoroethylene - , fluorobenzene , cyclic fluorocarbons , trifluoroiodomethane - - , and perfluorocar-bons . Most studies have involved the use of y-radiation, but Yi-Noo Tang and Rowland have discussed the recoil tritium-excitation of ethyl fluoride (and ethyl chloride), providing evidence for 1,2-HX elimination. 

The gaseous products of the "Co y-radiolysis (in Pyrex ampoules) of liquid trifluoroacetic acid at 23 C and of the polycrystalline acid at - 196°C have been identified (CgF, CHFg, COg, CO, Ha, and CgF, CHF3, COg, respectively) and their C-values determined. Failure to detect the formation of carbon tetrafluoride, tetrafluoroethylene, or silicon tetrafluoride was taken as circumstantial evidence for the non-occurrence of reactions involving fluorine-atom abstraction by trifluoromethyl radical or the generation of...
