Tlie reliability formulas for series and parallel systems can be used to obtain tlie reliability of a system lliat combines features of a series and a parallel system. Consider, for example, tlie system diagrammed in Fig. 20.2.1. Components A, B, C, and D have for llieir respective reliabilities 0.90, 0.80, 0.80, and 0.90. The system fails to operate if A fails, if B and C both fail, or if D fails. Component B and C constitute a parallel subsystem connected in series to components A and D. The reliability of the parallel subsystem is obtained by applying Eq. (20.2.2), which yields... [Pg.572]

Figure 2-47. Acceptable pressure losses between the vacuum vessel and the vacuum pump. Note reference sections on figure to system diagram to illustrate the sectional type hook-ups for connecting lines. Use 60% of the pressure loss read as acceptable loss for the system from process to vacuum pump, for initial estimate. P = pressure drop (torr) of line in question Po = operating pressure of vacuum process equipment, absolute, torr. By permission, Ryans, J. L. and Roper, D. Choose a research or development project with which you are familiar. Create a table of inputs and outputs for it such as that in Problem 1.1. Draw a system diagram representing your project (see, for example. Figure 1.3). [Pg.20]

Draw a systems diagram for a process with which you are familiar. Choose one input for investigation. Over what domain might this input be varied and controlled What linear mathematical model might be used to approximate the effect of this factor on one of the responses from the system Design a set of experiments to test the validity of this model. [Pg.224]

As an example, a recent intercomparison (37) included three N02 measurement techniques aTDLAS-based system and two chemical-based systems— the photolysis-ozone chemiluminescence system diagramed in Figure 7 and an instrument based on N02 plus luminol chemiluminescence. Above 2 ppbv the three instruments gave similar results, but at sub-ppbv the results from the three techniques became dissimilar. Tests on the prepared mixtures showed that the luminol results were affected by expected interferences from 03 and PAN. No interferences were found in the TDLAS system, but near the detection limit the data analysis procedures calculated levels of N02 that were too high. The outcome of this intercomparison was close to the ideal the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and precision of each instrument were objectively analyzed previous data sets taken by different systems can now be reliably evaluated and each investigator was able to perceive areas in which the technique could be improved. [Pg.268]

THE PROJECTED SITUATION IN 2-5 YEARS. The very same factors just considered in the existing situation should be considered to the extent possible. Some provision for growth should be allowed, even if this only be to assure that the hardware you purchase can be modified—at a reasonable cost and downtime—to accommodate the growth needs. Buying a system that is stretched to the very limit of its capacity is questionable practice. But individual circumstances vary, particularly if cost is an overriding consideration. Perhaps the system diagram could indicate provision for growth. [Pg.430]

Other subsystems are also structures that modify or pattern basic awareness into consciousness. The systems diagram presented as Figure 8-1 shows awareness in a distinct place, but it really spreads through... [Pg.98]

It should be noted that both stable and metastable compounds may occur in reaction couples. Analysis of the available experimental data shows that the growth of metastable compound layers is observed relatively rarely. The possibility of formation of metastable compounds is usually mentioned in the explanatory text accompanying the equilibrium phase diagram of any binary system. For certain systems, diagrams of both stable and metastable equilibria have been proposed.142145193 215-225... [Pg.142]

Because of the complexities of many food systems, numerous simplifications of phase diagrams have been developed over the years. In lipid systems, diagrams that show lines of constant sohd fat content at different temperatures and composition are often used to indicate phase mixing behavior of two fats (Timms 2003). These may be best called pseudo-phase diagrams since, although they represent phase mixing behavior between the two fats, they are not true phase diagrams. [Pg.50]
