The water quality (air content) and the water flow influenced the measurements using one channel. Therefore the four channel system was first tested in the laboratory with a stationary tube. The best results were obtained using tap water and a well controlled flow in a water-filled chamber. There are two types of stmctures one provides an internal pore system comprising interconnected cage-like voids the second provides a system of uniform channels which, in some instances, are one-dimensional and in others intersect with similar channels to produce two- or three-dimensional channel systems. The preferred type has two- or three-dimensional channel systems to provide rapid intracrystalline diffusion in adsorption and catalytic apphcations. [Pg.444]

Catalytic Properties. In zeoHtes, catalysis takes place preferentially within the intracrystaUine voids. Catalytic reactions are affected by aperture size and type of channel system, through which reactants and products must diffuse. Modification techniques include ion exchange, variation of Si/A1 ratio, hydrothermal dealumination or stabilization, which produces Lewis acidity, introduction of acidic groups such as bridging Si(OH)Al, which impart Briimsted acidity, and introducing dispersed metal phases such as noble metals. In addition, the zeoHte framework stmcture determines shape-selective effects. Several types have been demonstrated including reactant selectivity, product selectivity, and restricted transition-state selectivity (28). Micro Total Analysis Systems (pTAS) are chip-based micro-channel systems that serve for complete analytics. The word Total refers to the monolithic system character of the devices, integrating a multitude of miniature functional elements with minimal dead volumes. The main fields of application are related to biology, pharmacology, and analytical chemistry. Detailed applications of pTAS systems are given in Section 1.9.8. Recently, pTAS developments have strongly influenced the performance of organic syntheses by micro flow (see, e.g., [29]). Communication channels shall be set up between industry and academics. There has been inconsistency with regards to the characterization of foundry solid waste between industry and academics. The former cares about the workability and efficiency of materials in generating products. The latter concentrate on the technical behavior of materials if reused. The way that metal casters define the characteristics of their sands is completely different from what the contractor wants to know. For example, metal casters talk about ground fineness number, whereas contractors want to know fine and clay contents. The effect of crystal size of these zeolites on the resulted toluene conversion can be ruled out as the crystal sizes are rather comparable, which is particularly valid for ZSM-5 vs. SSZ-35 and Beta vs. SSZ-33. The concentrations of aluminum in the framework of ZSM-5 and SSZ-35 are comparable, Si/Al = 37.5 and 39, respectively. However, the differences in toluene conversion after 15 min of time-on-stream (T-O-S) are considerable being 25 and 48.5 %, respectively. On the other hand, SSZ-35 exhibits a substantially higher concentration of strong Lewis acid sites, which can promote a higher rate of the disproportionation reaction. Two mechanisms of xylene isomerization were proposed on the literature [8] and especially the bimolecular one involving the formation of biphenyl methane intermediate was considered to operate in ZSM-5 zeolites. Molecular modeling provided the evidence that the bimolecular transition state of toluene disproportionation reaction fits in the channel intersections of ZSM-5. With respect to that formation of this transition state should be severely limited in one-dimensional (1-D) channel system of medium pore zeolites. In toluene disproportionation the highest toluene conversion was achieved over SSZ-33 due to a high acidity combined with 3-D channel system. High toluene conversion over SSZ-35 results from its strong acidity and large reaction volumes in 18-MR cavities. Toluene conversion in the alkylation with isopropyl alcohol is influenced by a high rate of competitive toluene disproportionation over SSZ-33. ZSM-5 exhibits a high p-selectivity for /7-isopropyl toluene, which seems to be connected with diffusion constraints in the channel system of this zeolite. [Pg.278]
