Classification Societies exist to promote the safe construction of ships and to protect that condition throughout the life of the vessel. One of the tools available to shipbuilders, shipowners and surveyors that can be used to achieve these aims is Non-Destructive Examination (NDE). The intent of this presentation is to describe the application of NDE to hull structure during construction and also during periodic surveys as seen from the viewpoint of the Classification Surveyor.

In 1986, the National Geographic Society, in cooperation with the MoneU Center, conducted a worldwide survey of the sense of smell. Over 10 million survey forms were sent to readers of the Society s journal, of which close to 1.5 million forms were completed and returned. With responses to 40 demographic and 42 odor-related questions, the results constitute the largest set of data on human olfaction (4). 

Our survey of the activities of the Government, industry and voluntary bodies in the control of pollution discloses several issues which need further enquiry. The first and most difficult of these is how to balance the considerations which determine the levels of public and private expenditure on pollution control. Some forms of pollution bear more heavily on society than others some forms are cheaper than others to control and the public are more willing to pay for some forms of pollution control than for others. There are also short and long-term considerations in the short-term the incidence of pollution control on individual industries or categories of labor may be heavy but. . . what may appear to be the cheapest policy in the short-term may prove in the long-term to have been a false economy. 

Information about this splendid compilation came to me from a chemist, Robert Weast (1985), who was editor from 1952 until 1988... 37 years He also informed me that the creation (jointly by the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Physics) of the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, which began publication in 1972, was encouraged by the results of a survey which indicated how widely the Rubber Bible was used. Weast describes this journal as a truly outstanding source of critically evaluated data . In saying this, he underlined the crucial role of editors and contributors critical judgment in selecting data for such compilations. Numerous methods for the alkaloidal assay of lobelia and its galenical preparations have been published and two recent critical surveys, by a special committee of the Society of Public Analysts and by Caulkin, indicate that the process of Markwell is satisfactory. Processes for the isolation and separation of the various alkaloids have been protected by patent. Balandin states that Lobelia sessiliflora contains less alkaloid than L. injiata but yields a high-quality lobeline.

For a preliminary survey of the electron density, it is usual to make a pictorial representation as we did in previous chapters. Whilst such diagrams do not carry much information, they do provide a theoretical measure which can be compared to the results of X-ray diffraction studies. A whole volume of the Transactions of the American Chemical Society (1972) was devoted to the Symposium Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Electron Densities . 

In a survey of the methods used for peptido synthesis in 1968, the isoxazolium salt method was used in 7% of the examples surveyed J. H. Jones in Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins, Vol. 2, The Chemical Society, London, 1970, p. 145. 

General surveys of advances in coordination chemistry appear in Annual Reports , The Royal Society of Chemistry, London, Section A. More specialized reports were published in the form of the Specialist Periodical Reports Inorganic Chemistry of the Transition Elements , The Chemical Society, London (Volumes 1-6), which reviewed the literature published between 1971 and 1976, and the Specialist Periodical Reports Inorganic Chemistry of the Main Group Elements , The Chemical Society, London (Volumes 1-5), which reviewed the literature published between 1971 and 1976. Both these series have now been discontinued. 

Other relevant annual survey publications which contain information on coordination complexes are listed below. All are published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (London) in the Specialist Periodical Reports series.

The anxiety disorders are common and surprisingly disabling conditions. Studies on the health economics of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder document the cost to the individual and to society. Attention has focused on the major psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia and the dementias. Studies suggest that many anxiety disorders are of early onset and too often chronic they are quite common and impose a heavy burden on society. More studies will be needed to discern the fine grain in the survey material and to identify more precisely the location and type of societal costs. These factors will vary from country to country, from district to district, between men and women and between various age groups.

Violence has also expanded into the public schools to a degree never before observed. Metropolitan areas are seeing almost daily reports of students bringing knives and guns into the schools. In fact, a recent survey showed that 11% of teachers and 23% of students nationwide have been victims of violence in school.219 In addition to the suffering and loss of life, the monetary cost to society of every murder is calculated at 2.4 million.220... 

This in itself is not too surprising. What is much more surprising is that a number of cross-national surveys have shown that the degree of income inequality in a given society is strongly related to the society s level of mortality. The more steep the income gradient (the more severely the poor... 

Chemical Society (see above) only 43% had a favorable opinion of the chemical industry. It was ranked lowest among a list of 10 industries, and only 1 in 10 respondents felt very well informed about the role of chemicals in improving human health. The situation is not appreciably better elsewhere. In Canada only 40% of adults in a 1999 survey had a favorable view of the chemical industry, and only 18% felt that the industry was excellent or good at being honest. A survey of 9,000 Western European citizens by the European Chemical Industry Council showed that only 45% had a favorable view of the chemical industry. There is still a lot of work to do to change these opinions and perceptions.

Other reviews related to this contribution should also be mentioned, in addition to the chapters of this series, which we shall recall later. Some of these deal in general with the problem of classification of indole alkaloids and with chemo-taxonomic investigation (7-5). The chemistry of indole alkaloids is included in the Royal Society of Chemistry s Specialist Periodical Reports and has been extensively reviewed in a one-volume survey edited by J. E. Saxton (6), presenting a reasonably complete, although not exhaustive, picture of the state of the art. Other books on indole alkaloid chemistry treating this area cursorily should also be mentioned (7, 8). Recently, the genus Tabernaemontana was excellently reviewed, particularly with respect to taxonomy, phytochemistry, ethnobotany, and pharmacology (9). 

The literature on acid rain is simply vast. One of the better introductory texts is Acid Rain Its Causes and its Effects on Inland Waters, by B. J. Mason, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1992. Dozens of Websites supplement and update Mason s book. For a general but more widely ranging survey of pollution and its legacy, try Pollution Causes, Effects and Control (fourth edition), edited by Roy M. Harrison, Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, 2001. 

The nine surveyed companies volunteered to participate. Industry trade associations (American Chemistry Council [ACC], National Association of Chemical Distributors [NACD], Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association [SOCMA]) and professional societies (Center for Chemical Process Safety [CCPS]) were asked to identify possible survey candidates-small, medium, and large sites or companies with reactive chemical hazard management programs or practices in place.
