Safe construction

Classification Societies exist to promote the safe construction of ships and to protect that condition throughout the life of the vessel. One of the tools available to shipbuilders, shipowners and surveyors that can be used to achieve these aims is Non-Destructive Examination (NDE). The intent of this presentation is to describe the application of NDE to hull structure during construction and also during periodic surveys as seen from the viewpoint of the Classification Surveyor. [Pg.1041]

Avoid building blocks with interconnected internal cavities in basement walls. Basement walls made from in situ (poured) concrete are recommended. Concrete elements require careful and permanent sealing of all joints. Designs similar to swimming pools, manure tanks in agriculture and bomb shelters will provide a radon safe construction. [Pg.527]

There is no conflict between energy conservation and radon protective or safe design. Radon safe construction can be made as energy efficient as can conventional design. Radon safe design only... [Pg.528]

It is important to carefully consider the foregoing points in the design of the weight coating since the ability of a contractor to safely construct the line relates very closely to the negative buoyancy of the pipe and coating. [Pg.1061]

The general layout of an industrial process plant involves considerations of cost and safety. Some of the factors that contribute to safety and loss prevention are (i) segregation of different risks (ii) minimization of vulnerable pipework (iii) containment of accidents (iv) limitation of exposure (v) efficient and safe construction (vi) efficient... [Pg.190]

The hot gas duct is represented by coaxial pipes between core and reformer. The iimer hot gas pipe is insulated on the inside and cooled by counterflow on the outside. Since the steam generator has to be on the alert in case of a decay heat removal action, the pipe system has to be safely constructed. In particular, fast pressure transients which could be destructive should be avoided by means of flow limitation. [Pg.26]

Secondly, this combustion generally takes place in a large-scale power plant with the capacity and space to safely construct and operate reductant reservoirs which contain NHj (or Nffj precursors) that can be added to the exhaust stream in order to reduce NOx over a suitable heterogeneous catalyst. Since the [NOx] emitted from these power sources is constant the [reductant] that must be added to reduce this is also constant, making process control relatively straightforward. [Pg.10]

The control of risks is essential to secure and maintain a healthy and safe construction site or workplace which complies with the relevant legal requirements. Hazard identification and risk assessment are covered in Chapter 5 and these together with appropriate risk control measures form the core of HSG 65 implementing and planning section of the management model. Chapter 1 covers this in more detail. [Pg.81]

It follows from this that the use of safe systems of work is in no way a replacement for other precautions, such as good equipment design, safe construction and the use of physical safeguards. However, there are many situations where these will not give adequate protection in themselves, and then a carefully thought-out and properly implemented safe system of work is especially important. This is usually call a health and safety method statement (or method statement for short). [Pg.88]

School transportation providers should utilize computer-based routing and scheduling systems to attain maximum efficiency in their operations and safety for all the children. It is preferable that all children ride on yellow school buses, but in those areas where this is not possible, children should be provided with the safest possible transit systems and equipment or safely-constructed and well-equipped infrastructure to get them to school. The NHTSA Pupil Transportation Safety Guideline 17 for route planning indicates that ... [Pg.234]

The safe construction of vessels is based on the theory of elasticity and plasticity. Rules for the calculation of the required wall thicknesses and associated tests are given in national codes. Examples of these are in Germany, AD Merkblatter (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Druckbehalter) in Great Britain, appropriate British Standards Specifications (e.g. BS 5500 for welded vessels) and in... [Pg.244]

The current trend in the field of product design aims at a purposeful systematic approach. Issues of quality, safety, and reliability of the final product are the decisive entry parameters of product development. A satisfied customer is one of the main final parameters of product utilization, whereas their satisfaction means that the producer must create a good-quality, safe, and reliable product. Safe construction in this matter is above all systematic and methodical work. [Pg.46]

One of the invitees of the 1987 scientific conference for departments of both universities, held at Technical College in Kosice (TC), was Dr Ing. Helmut Stmad from Wuppertal, a professor in the field of safe construction of machines. While looking for a partner at that time, it was agreed that the most suitable workplace that was scientifically focused on this field was the Department of Transportation Machines and Facilities of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. My knowledge of German... [Pg.193]

Looking forward, once a potential site (or indeed more than one) has been identified, a programme of site-specific research will be undertaken to ensure that the site s characteristics will enable a facility to be safely constructed and operated and that its long term impact is acceptable. [Pg.52]

While studies have shown that an IIPP requirement significantly reduces injury and illness rates (OSHA 2012), an organization may not feel it is appropriate to require all contractors to develop an llPP in order to qualify to perform work. A safe construction environment can be maintained by some combination of company health and safety programs and the development and application of site-specific HASP requirements. Site-specific plans may include... [Pg.59]
