Anaphylactoid reactions

Optic neuritis (a decrease in visual acuity and changes in color perception), which appears to be related to the dose given and die duration of treatment, has occurred in some patients receiving ethambutol. Usually, tiiis adverse reaction disappears when the drug is discontinued. Other adverse reactions are dermatitis, pruritus, anaphylactoid reactions (unusual or exaggerated allergic reactions), joint pain, anorexia, nausea, and vomiting. 

Other adverse reactions include local irritation when heparin is given via the SC route. Hypersensitivity reactions may also occur with any route of administration and include fever, chills, and urticaria. More serious hypersensitivity reactions include an astiima-like reaction and an anaphylactoid reaction. 

Anaphylactoid reactions (eg, hives, swelling of the mouth and throat, difficulty breathing [dyspnea], hypotension, and shock)... 

Later on, researchers realized that similar symptoms can be elicited in animals not immunized or by the injection of histamine and were called anaphylactoid reactions (Behring 1916, Hanzlik 1920, Lorenz 1977 [quoted in 36]).

Adverse effects of colloids are generally extensions of their pharmacologic activity (e.g., fluid overload, dilutional coagulopathy). Albumin and dex-tran may be associated with anaphylactoid reactions or anaphylaxis. Bleeding may occur in certain patients receiving hetastarch and dextran. 

Insomnia and dry mouth are the most frequent side effects. Other side effects were tremor, rash, and anaphylactoid reactions. 

The most important type to the anaesthetist is type B, which encompasses both anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions.
