Survey Results

There are tougher requirements established for commercial entities applying for access than for academic institutions. A government group, with occasional input from research institutes and academia, reviews the applications for access. The protocols for the research are reviewed at the same time as the application for access is reviewed and this is described as an effective process. The Government has established a maximum time for researchers to stay in the field. 

Accessibility to remote areas is becoming more difficult. Post-access event reporting is required and minimally comprises taxonomic name, locality, amount and number of samples collected, sample destination and the preservation method. The level of detail is also determined by the local collaborator. Intellectual property issues are typically handled by the overseas parties in collaboration with the local partners. 

It was felt that the CBD had accelerated local efforts to conduct taxonomic inventories. The impact on research breadth and depth and collaborative investment was not clear. 

There are regulations in place to cover the collection of microbes in Japan, but not the collection of higher plants and animals. Since 1968, efforts have been underway to conserve microbial samples and deposit them for patent application in the International Patent Organism Depository (IPOD)53 within the Patent Office. Site Selection Factors that must be considered in evaluating potential solid-waste-disposal sites are summarized in Table 25-71. As with audits, survey results form the basis of a facility-specific report for circulation to facility management and the PSM team. This report may follow the questionnaire format, with responses tabulated and analysis and commentary provided at the end. If necessary, baseline PSM assessments can be performed by a single individual using a survey method. 

Audits and surveys yield two reports one to the facility reviewed and one to the PSM team. While this dual reporting maybe more time-consuming than simply collating information for future reference, it is likely to be time well spent. Providing audit or survey results (appropriately condensed to protect confidentiality) to facility managers not only provides valuable feedback, but also helps to underscore their involvement in the PSM initiative. 

If you decide to conduct a PSM user survey, keep in mind that it s essential to provide feedback to respondents on the survey results and the action plans or system changes (if any) that result. If users see that their input has value and impact, they are more likely to develop the sense of ownership that will help determine the long-term success of the PSM system. 

A survey of 500 plants that have implemented predictive maintenance methods indicates substantial improvements in reliability, availability and operating costs. The successful programs included in the survey include a cross-section of industries and provide an overview of the types of improvements that can be expected. Based on the survey results, major improvements can be achieved in maintenance costs, unscheduled machine failures, repair downtime, spare parts inventory, and both direct and in-direct overtime premiums. In addition, the survey indicated a dramatic improvement in machine life, production, operator safety, product quality and overall profitability. 

Survey results from a pilot scheme indicated positive improvement in awareness and quality relationships, and that program participants endorsed rolling out the program to other parts of the business.

Reproductive Effects. Operating room nurses exposed to trichloroethylene have been reported to have an increased incidence of miscarriages, but they were exposed to many other anesthetics as well (Corbett et al. 1974). Survey results of 1,926 women who had spontaneous abortions revealed a greater risk of abortion associated with trichloroethylene exposure (Windham et al. 1991). This study is limited by multiple chemical exposure. Humans exposed to trichloroethylene in the drinking water in certain areas of the country have not shown adverse reproductive effects (Byers et al. 1988 Freni and Bloomer 1988 Lagakos et al. 1986a). 

Since simultaneous health effect surveys were conducted in the Love Canal area, environmental test results In the homes adjoining the Canal were examined in an effort to demonstrate the presence or absence of correlations between environmental chemical levels and frequencies of particular health abnormalities. This effort was largely unsuccessful, since the total exposed population proved to be too small for meaningful interpretation of most health endpoints of Interest and since difficulties in controlling for subjective reporting of health symptoms made it difficult to Interpret health survey results O, ).

Several Ph D. candidates from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences in China attended the workshop. At the workshop, they distributed the survey included in this appendix to gain greater understanding of participants views regarding POPs management.
