Plants, individual

A type of waterside maintenance chemical treatment. Any of a very wide range of chemicals that prevent or reduce tendencies of deposition, fouling, scaling, corrosion, or other unwanted phenomena to occur in a water system. Typically for smaller boiler plants, individual inhibitors are blended together to produce various multifunctional formulations specific for particular water chemistry and/or operating conditions. Larger boiler plants tend to use individual active component inhibitors. [Pg.743]

This type of classification is very often used in many areas of science. Figure 30.3 shows a very small part of the classification of plants. Individual species are... [Pg.57]

Resource restriction. If chemical defenses vary quantitatively within or between individual plants, then some tissues may be defended while others are not. As a result, insects have available to them the evolutionary option of avoidance they may develop the ability to recognize poor quality food and avoid it, rather than evolving detoxication mechanisms (12,18). This should result in feeding activity concentrated on a restricted set of tissues or plant individuals. There are two important consequences of this. First, contact rates with defenses can be lowered by avoiding them. Hence, the evolution of detoxication is less li)cely or less rapid (18). Second, and perhaps more important, the effectiveness of natural enemies may be enhanced (below). [Pg.39]

Full-shift personal samples taken by the companies and the study investigators were reported across a number of jobs over the years 1977-86 in three fibre plants in the United States (Table 3) (Zey McCammon, 1989 McCammon Zey, 1990 Zey Bloom, 1990). The average typical exposures for the operators at the polymerization reactor were 0.9-1.6 ppm [0.4-3.4 mg/ni ], based on more than 450 samples in each plant. Individual measurements were as high as 62 ppm [135 mg/m ]. Respirators were... [Pg.48]

Fatty acid synthase (FAS) carries out the chain elongation steps of fatty acid biosynthesis. FAS is a large multienzyme complex. In mammals, FAS contains two subunits, each containing multiple enzyme activities. In bacteria and plants, individual proteins, which associate into a large complex, catalyze the individual steps of the synthesis scheme. [Pg.20]

As part of its investment holdings the Russian Orthodox Church operates a number of commercial enterprises, including banks, oil companies, and a bottling plant. Individual churches and monasteries also operate smaller-scale food and water ventures. [Pg.179]

Genotypic variation guarantees diversity in both morphological and chemical characters. In addition, more complex patterns of variation or polymorphism occur in many plants individuals from natural populations of plants often differ in the amounts and types of compound present. Roots, leaves, stems, seeds, fruit walls, flowers, and buds frequently differ in chemical composition. Further, each of these parts may vaiy at different stages of development and at various times of the year (Luckner, 1990 Waterman and Mole, 1989 Wink, 1987). Daily (diurnal) variation of many compounds also occurs (Fliick, 1963 Luckner, 1990). The reasons that plants fail to produce or accumulate compounds are numerous, but include regulatory processes, blockage of pathways by mutations, and the absence of precursors at the site of synthesis. [Pg.7]

Interpretations are based on results of green house experiments with soils contaminated with arsenic. Two soils were used as adsorbents Red and YeUow Latosols. Both P. vittata and P. aureum have relatively large biomass and are species of common ferns. The two species were planted individually into pots. [Pg.232]

Inherited traits manifest themselves in each plant individual, and this is the background of intra-spec i c diversity. However, the appearance of variability at population level depends also on the occurrence frequencies of corresponding genes. Complex genetic constitution of a population determines the abundance and diffusion of speci c chemotypes in the plant stand and indirectly—the quality of the drug, which can be harvested there. [Pg.100]

Although individual household PV modules are more expensive per kilowatt than large centralized PV power plants, individual units become cost competitive when distribution costs are eliminated. From 1995 to 2009, solar module costs per installed watt declined at 5 to 6 percent annually, a trend projected to continue, particularly in regions with ample sunlight, expensive fossil fuel electricity, and government incentives. [Pg.1675]

Regarding storage and accumulation in plant individuals, PA distribution is uneven and follows a precise strategy, which is a consequence of the above-mentioned ecological roles. It is well-known that, to exert their... [Pg.75]

PSA is a methodology that can be applied to provide a structured analysis process to evaluate the frequency and consequences of accidents scenarios in nuclear power plants. NRC first applied PSA in the Reactor Safety Study (NRC, 1975). An important initiative (NRC, 1988) was the issuance of Generic Letter GL-88-20, which originated the program known as IPE, Individual Plant Examination, NRC (1988). This is because the Reactor Safety Study did not consider each plant individually in the risk assessment. [Pg.1212]
