Initial Survey

In preparing a planned maintenance system the opportunity should be taken to involve the whole department. This can be achieved by using the operatives who will subsequently action the work to carry out the initial survey of plant and equipment.

The most comprehensive technique currently available for the initial survey of the distribution of a drug is that of whole body autoradiography. The species of animals used include mice, rats, hamsters, monkeys, pigs, dogs, and ferrets. The recommendations are clear. While semi-empirical models appear to perform adequately in most cases in the role of supplying reactant and transition-state geometries, some caution needs to be exercised. On the other hand, structures from small-basis-set Hartree-Fock models turn in an overall excellent account. The 3-2IG model, in particular, would appear to be an excellent choice for supplying transition-state geometries for organic reactions, at least insofar as initial surveys.

As a result, while such methods have been very useful in the past and continue to be applied for initial surveys of air quality in areas in which measurements have not been made in the past, they have generally been abandoned in favor of instrumental methods of analysis. As a result, this chapter focuses on the most commonly used instrumental, often spectroscopic, methods for measuring air pollutants, trace gases, and particles in air (e.g., see Roscoe and Clemitshaw, 1997). Probably the most complete study of river water quality w as completed by the U.S. Geological Survey, released in early 1987 and periodically updated. The initial survey was coordinated by Smith and Alexander (USGS) and Wolman (The Johns Hopkins University), including water quality records from two nationwide sampling networks. The network included over 300 locations on the major nvers of the United States. Twenty-four water quality parameters are measured. Photographs taken of distribution decks, tower packing, nozzles, waterfall patterns, sumps, etc. can be useful but are almost never taken, either during an initial survey or during the implementation of any subsequent water treatment contract. Both vendors and operators tend to rely on memories, which are notoriously selective and not quantifiable.

The dietary intake of OCPs is considered the main source of exposure for the general population in Australia and in many other countries. Estimates of dietary intakes of OCPs from AMBS are summarised in Tables 17.3 and 17.4 for the years 1971 to 1996. The initial survey in 1970 estimated that excessive intakes of dieldrin and HCB could occur in the diets of 15 18 year old males. Dieldrin and HCB had estimated daily intakes from 0.4 to 1.8 (0.1) and 0.7 to 1.4 (0.6) pg kg-1 bw, respectively. For comparison the accepted daily intake (ADI) at the time is shown in parenthesis (NHMRC, 1971). By 1976, the estimated daily intake of dieldrin remained relatively high, particularly for infants (e.g. 0.1 pg kg-1 bw), while HCB residues in foods were too low to estimate a dietary intake. 

The most extensive effort involves quality assurance. CDC provides common quality control (QC) materials and all members use standardized QC procedures. In addition, CDC regularly surveys the CRMLN laboratories to ensure they meet the required criteria. Initially, surveys were conducted monthly however, as the laboratories gained experience and performance improved, the survey schedule was changed to bimonthly. These surveys use CDC frozen serum secondary reference materials that have been prepared using NCCLS C37-A protocol [28], TC surveys include three levels analyzed in duplicate in two runs. HDLC surveys include four levels analyzed in duplicate in four runs. As an additional check on the quantitative step of the HDLC method, a low-total cholesterol material with cholesterol concentration <100 mg/dl is added to the TC survey. LDLC surveys include four levels analyzed in quadruplicate in four runs. 

This chapter will concentrate primarily on features of the chemistry of diboron compounds of particular interest from the organometallic point of view. While our limited scope does not permit a comprehensive review of all aspects of diboron chemistry, we will initially survey some general features of the subject, with emphasis on unique synthetic aspects and on properties particularly characteristic of compounds containing a simple electron-pair bond between boron atoms. Previously, we published several review articles provided some aspects on boron chemistry,8 16 and including natural boron-containing compounds.17,18...
