Other appHcations of firefly hioluminescence include measurement of the activity of bacteria in secondary sewage treatment activated sludge (296,297), detection of bacteria in clean rooms and operating rooms, measurement of bacteria in bottled foods, beverages (298), and pharmaceuticals (299), determination of the antimicrobial activity of potential dmgs (300), determination of the viabiHty of seeds (301), and measuring marine biomass concentrations as a function of ocean depth or geographical location (302). 

The agent should be odorless, nonflammable at concentrations which are likely to be used in the operating room, and stable both on storage and to soda lime, which is used as the CO2 absorber in the anesthetic circuit. Induction of, and recovery from, anesthesia should be rapid, and minimal side effects... 

Disinfectants are used in janitorial suppHes for hospitals and the home to treat toilet bowls, floors and walls in sick rooms, operating rooms, and wherever infective microorganisms are a problem. Instmments such as scalpels, scissors, catheters, and endoscopes used to invade tissues are treated with disinfectants, as are dental instmments. Laws require that hospital waste must be disinfected so that bacteria and vimses, such as the hepatitis vims and the AIDS vims, do not infect hospital workers and people in the community. 

At high pressure experiments the reactor should be installed in a pressure cell. All check valves before it, and the filter with the flow controller after it, can be kept in the vented operating room. As a minimum, the bypass valve and the flow controller must be accessible to the operator. This can be done by extended valve stems that reach through the protecting wall. Both the operating room and the pressure cell should be well ventilated and equipped by CO alarm instruments. 

These rooms are usually rectangular with doors on one of the short sides for entrance and exit of materials and operators. Room sizes vary from 18 m to more than 300 m and the shapes range from cubic to elongated with rectangular cross-section. 

There has been some controversy over the effect of traces of anesthehc gases in the operating room on the health of personnel working there daily Numerous animal studies usmg low levels of anestheltic gases have failed to show any effects, and several epidemiological studies show that human health is not affected by traces of anesthetic gases [20]... 

Malignant hyperthermia may occur outside the operating room. Gronert has described a patient who had episodic fever and a positive muscle biopsy for MH. MH may occur in the postoperative recovery room or even on return to the ward.

Increases in miscarriages have been reported among nurses exposed to rmspecified concentrations of trichloroethylene and other chemicals in operating rooms (Corbett et al. 1974). The occurrence of miscarriages could not conclusively be attributed to trichloroethylene because there was concomitant exposure to other chemicals. 

Reproductive Effects. Operating room nurses exposed to trichloroethylene have been reported to have an increased incidence of miscarriages, but they were exposed to many other anesthetics as well (Corbett et al. 1974). Survey results of 1,926 women who had spontaneous abortions revealed a greater risk of abortion associated with trichloroethylene exposure (Windham et al. 1991). This study is limited by multiple chemical exposure. Humans exposed to trichloroethylene in the drinking water in certain areas of the country have not shown adverse reproductive effects (Byers et al. 1988 Freni and Bloomer 1988 Lagakos et al. 1986a).

In 1991, Filipovic formed her own company to commercialize Blue Bottle technology. In 1999, she founded a new company, which uses a process similar to Blue Bottle technology to capture and convert greenhouse gas emissions from hospital operating rooms. These emissions had previously been discharged into the atmosphere.
