Storage tank piping

Ammonia is corrosive to akoys of copper and zinc and these materials must not be used in ammonia service. Iron or steel should usuaky be the only metal in ammonia storage tanks, piping, and fittings. It is recommended that ammonia should contain at least 0.2% water to prevent steel stress corrosion. Mercury thermometers should be avoided. 

Demolition Clam. A small plastic case designed to hold approx 0.5 lb of plastic HE. Another design of the demolition clam w/o case consists of a ret angular block of PEX (1.7 lb) provided with 4 permanent magnets and connections for 2 delay-type firing devices. The demolition clam is used to destroy steel structures such as gasoline storage tanks, pipe lines, vehicles, etc (Refs 1 2)...

Fresh water. Aluminum and its alloys are not prone to corrosion on exposure to distilled water up to 180°C. Thus storage tanks, piping and fittings of the alloy can be used for handling distilled water. The composition of natural fresh water is variable. In spite of this restriction, the alloys are not attacked, even at 180°C in natural waters. It should be noted that pitting may occur when a small thickness of the sample is exposed. In this case Alclad 3003 is recommended for use to avoid failure due to pitting. 

Vinyl ester laminates are used in industrial equipment and scrubbers such as absorption towers, process vessels, storage tanks, piping, hood scrubbers, ducts, and exhaust stacks, which all handling corrosive materials. Reference [2] provides detailed information concerning vinyl esters as piping materials. 

Steels are the most common materials used for oil and gas applications. The most common use of steel is for structural applications, such as support structures, piles, superstructures, underground pipelines, storage tanks, pipings, and so forth. The main requirements of structural steel are as follows ... 

Cast iron or steel pumps are recommended and can either be centrifugal, hermetic or those operating with solvent resistant mechanical seals. All vessels and intake lines, marked at the delivery point, should be clearly labelled with the name of the solvent. Regular, recorded inspection should be undertaken to ensure the integrity of the storage tank, pipes and pumps. 

The vinyl ester fimctionality of the epoxy vinyl esters provides outstanding hydrolysis and chemical resistance properties, in addition to the inherent thermal resistance and toughness properties of the epoxy backbone. These attributes have made epoxy vinyl esters a material of choice in demanding structural composite applications such as corrosive chemicals storage tanks, pipes, and ancillary equipment for chemical processing. Other applications include automotive valve covers and oil pans, boats, and pultruded construction parts. Significant efforts have been devoted to improve toughness and to reduce levels of styrene in epoxy vinyl ester formulations because of environmental concerns. In addition to Dow Chemical, other major suppliers of epoxy vinyl esters include Ashland, AOC, DSM, Interplastic, and Reichhold (DIG).

These are preferred to polyesters in demanding applications, where their superior mechanical performance (especially greater toughness) justifies their higher cost. 

The presence of aggressive microbes may also be quite severe in industrial water-handling systems, for example, cooling water and injection water systems, heat exchangers, wastewater treatment facilities, storage tanks, piping systems, and all manner of power plants, including those based on fossil fuels, hydroelectric, and nuclear [8]. Table 7.2 lists potential problem areas by industry [9].

PAINTS, In laboratory tests, most paints were found to be protective to all aluminum alloys. Exceptions were those containing mercury, lead or copper compound pigments. These were corrosive. Aluminum alloy equipment has been used for process and storage tanks, pipe, heat exchanger tube, condensers. and reaction vessels in the paint industry. In automated and robot application, the material temperature in the storage tank should be kept constant within the working range of 20°C to 30°C, for example, at 23 + 1°C. The specific heat of water is to be taken into account accordingly (see Section 7.2). Circulation systems, which can be exposed to severe temperature fluctuation, must be insulated or provided with thermostatic temperature control. In addition, storage tanks, pipes, filters, and all other paint-carrying elements must be made of stainless steel (cf. table of the tested grades) or of suitable plastics.
