A.C7ylonitnk Content. Standard grades available ia the market contain between 15 to 50% acrylonitrile. The acrylonitrile content of nitrile mbber has a significant effect on two properties chemical resistance and low temperature performance. As the acrylonitrile content of the polymer is iacreased, the chemical resistance is improved whereas the low temperature properties are diminished. [Pg.522]

The bisphenol A-derived epoxy resins are most frequendy cured with anhydrides, aUphatic amines, or polyamides, depending on desired end properties. Some of the outstanding properties are superior electrical properties, chemical resistance, heat resistance, and adhesion. Conventional epoxy resins range from low viscosity Hquids to soHd resins. [Pg.363]

To reduce the permeation of specific compounds through plastic sheets, barriers are introduced in multi-layer structures. Each layer provides its own performance in terms of heat sealing, barrier properties, chemical resistance, stiffness, etc., and... [Pg.113]

Treatment of polymers containing reactive sites, such as hydroxy, carboxy or cyano groups, with sulfur tetrafluoride results in increased hydrophobic properties, chemical resistance and decreased flammability.234 236... [Pg.395]

Repeat this scenario with just about any common object you can think of, and you begin to understand why polymers are so common. Plastics come in an extremely wide range of compositions, with different physical and mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and cost. They can be molded, blow-molded, extruded, and shaped into an infinite variety of one-, two-, and three-dimensional shapes and objects. They can be made optically clear translucent, opaque, textured, and multicolored. They have made available to all of us household items that were once enjoyed only by the extremely wealthy (Wascher 1988). Thus the evolution of what many call the Plastic Age was inevitable. [Pg.8]

Synthetic polymers are also a major contributor in the textile industry. Synthetic fibers show excellent strength properties, chemical resistance, wrinkle resistance, and abrasion resistance. These fibers also show some undesired properties such as hydrophobicity due to which they show wearing discomfort as perspiration cannot penetrate the fabric and lower the reactivity with chemical agents, which normally act as barrier to other finishing agents. These problems are due to the presence of hydrophobic groups on the surface of synthetic polymers. Therefore, surface modification of synthetic polymers is very necessary. [Pg.94]

In general, fluoropolymers provide solutions to the industry demands for higher service temperatures, better electrical properties, chemical resistance, improved flame resistance, and reduced smoke generation. [Pg.190]

Sheet molding uses three groups of fillers for different purposes metal oxides for curing, fibers for reinforcement, particulate fillers for variety of other purposes such as improvements in mechanical properties, chemical resistance and surface appearance. The technology is very well documented." ... [Pg.772]

The most important component of a paint formulation is the binder. Binders essentially determine the application method, drying and hardening behavior, adhesion to the substrate, mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and resistance to weathering. [Pg.3]

Polyamides Thermoplastic aromatic or aliphatic polymer of dicarboxylic acids and diamines, of amino acids, or of lactams. Has good mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and antifriction properties. Processed by extrusion and molding. Used in fibers and molded parts. Also called PA. [Pg.204]

All copolymers have a higher solubility, higher glass transition temperature, and a better thermal stability than PET. The thermal properties are comparable to those of PEN, and for 1,3-propanediol modified samples these properties are even better than those of PEN. Longer alkyl side chains in the alcohol decrease the thermal properties. Chemical resistance data are collected in Table 11.9. The chemical resistance is expressed at the retention of elongation at a break after chemical treatment. [Pg.269]

The viscosity of a resin system can be reduced by the addition of a diluent, which can be non-reactive (e.g. dibutyl phthalate, benzyl alcohol and furfuryl alcohol) or reactive (a low molecular weight epoxide, triphenyl phosphite or x-butyrolactone). The x-butyrolactone can, for example, act as a solvent for a catalyst system used in a solventless system and take part in the reaction. Diluents tend to be rather volatile and could be partially lost in cure systems operating under a vacuum. Flexibilizers can impart toughness but at the expense of mechanical properties, chemical resistance and heat resistance. [Pg.513]

Isopthalic resins are based on isopthalic acid and maleic anhydride. Incorporation of isopthalic acid causes an increase in UPE of the resulting polyesteg which exhibits good mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and thermal resistance. The correlation between corrosion resistance and polyester structure is not well established. In general, if the ester is sterically crowded and there are fewer ester groups in the chain, good chemical resistance and corrosion resistance are achieved [60]. [Pg.90]

A paint based on an epoxy-cardanol resin has been produced and then characterized in order to compare its performance (i.e. physico-mechanical properties, chemical resistance and corrosion protection efficiency) with that of paints made with unmodified epoxy resin (Aggarwal et al., 2007). It was found that the new bio-based paints show better anticorrosive properties than the unmodified paints and thus the cardanol-based epoxy resin represents an optimal binder medium for the formulation of paints. [Pg.98]

These high performance polymers not only meet unusual requirements for long term durability at elevated temperatures, they may also have unique and diverse characteristics such as conductivity, insulating properties, chemical resistance, self extinquishing, selective gas barrier properties and are also used in normal applications as films, fibers, elastomers, adhesives, and coatings as well as injection moldable materials of construction. [Pg.3]

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE BLEND Blending improves flow properties, chemical resistance, impact properties at low temperature, and painting properties. At the same time thermal properties and flame retardancy are inferior compared with polycarbonate. [Pg.84]
