Valve covers

Transportation end uses are expected to become a significant outlet. Products under development include an engine valve cover, as are various housings such as those for od pumps, water pumps, starter motors, and certain transmission parts. These end uses employ PPS because it resists high temperatures and is also chemically resistant. Fuel system parts can employ the excellent chemical resistance of PPS, replacing nylon, if alcohol-based fuels are adopted to reduce emissions.

The major source of fugitive emissions from a gas compressor cylinder is the piston rod packing. Other sources of fugitive emissions are around the cylinder valve covers, unloader covers, unloader actuator packing, and clearance pocket gasket and actuator packing.

A record shall be maintained for locating valves covered by paras. GR-5.11.1 and GR-5.11.2. This record may be maintained on operating maps, separate files, or summary sheets, and the information on this record shall be readily accessible to personnel required to respond to emergencies.

Ignition within the crankcase can be just a startling noise or result in engine fire. When hydrogen ignites within the crankcase, a sudden pressure rise occurs. To relieve this pressure, a pressure relief valve must be installed on the valve cover. A typical pressure relief valve installation is shown in Figure 3-7.

API 600 ratings cover only the following nominal pipe sizes and pressures 1, 1-1/4, 1=1/2, 2, 2=1/2, 3, and 4 thru 24-inch even sizes at 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1,500, and 2,500-pound ratings. Figure 9-1 illustrates the valves covered by the specification and shows comparative costs. 

The North American RTPs usage number is expected to climb to 4% by 2006. DaimlerChrysler AG is backing the first high-volume use of RTPs for valve covers with its decision to use DuPont s Minion... 

Sanitary issues were reduced by adding a bite valve cover. Prior to the cover, the hydration system bite valve danghng on the end of its tube could come into contact with a number of contaminants on the battlefield. The soldier would put it in his mouth to drink and become exposed to organisms that could lead to battlefield illness. The problem remains today in that some soldiers use their mouths to take the cover off the bite valve. 

Leakage is the major hazard when pumping caustic. It is most likely at piping joints, valves, and pump seals. Many systems use flange guards and valve covers where leaks could endanger personnel. Valves are most likely to leak at their stems. Blowout-proof...
