Barite, predominately BaSO, meets the overall requirements for weighting material better than other materials and is used for increasing the density of drilling fluids throughout the world. Commercial barite has a lower specific gravity than pure barium sulfate owing to the presence of associated minerals, such as silica. Barite is virtually insoluble in water and does not react with other mud constituents. Most operators prefer barite that meets API specifications (Table 2) (23). The barite content in mud depends on the desired density but can be as high as 2000 kg/km (700 lb/bbl). 

Propanol is a commodity chemical sold on specification (Table 2). Whereas the specification requires at least 99.8% 1-propanol, purity is generally ia excess of 99.9%.

Introduction of a 3-bromosubstituent onto thiophene is accompHshed by initial tribromination, followed by reduction of the a-bromines by treatment with zinc/acetic acid, thereby utilizing only one of three bromines introduced. The so-called halogen dance sequence of reactions, whereby bromothiophenes are treated with base, causing proton abstraction and rearrangement of bromine to the produce the most-stable anion, has also been used to introduce a bromine atom at position 3. The main producers worldwide are Shell, Gulf, and Ethyl. Analytical methods used to identify monomers have improved significantly from those that quantify whole classes of compounds, such as amino acids, peptides, proteins, and primary amines (Undefriend et al., 1972) or carbohydrate-like compounds (Johnson and Sieburth, 1977) to ones that are molecule-specific (Table II). Most of these methods are based on combining chromatography techniques that can separate complex mixtures of molecules with highly sensitive detectors that can approach the nanomolar or picomolar range.
