Here again, few data are available on the solubility of the various diluents, in either its use or being studied for use in solvent extraction circuits. The process flow sheet was first tested for direct leaching of steel mill flue dust and production of zinc metal by electrowinning. The tests were performed in a continuously operating pilot plant, producing 10-20 kg/day zinc metal. The same pilot plant was then used for treating copper/zinc-rich brass mill flue dust in a closed loop operation, recycling all the zinc solvent extraction raffinate to the copper circuit leach section. In the zinc circuit leach section, only the amount of zinc rich dust necessary for neutralization of the copper solvent extraction raffinate was used. The results obtained from the pilot plant tests indicated contamination problems within the solvent extraction loops. The estimation of economic data showed a weak return on the assets compared with the alkali route, and sensitivity toward the raw material price. [Pg.620]

In this section, we present the results of our studies on the recovery of copper from an actual solvent extraction raffinate from a copper mine in the United States and compare its performance to Dowex 43084 on mock ore solutions. Fourteen bed volumes of a solution containing 3000-ppm ferric ion and 1000-ppm cupric ion at pH 1.5 were passed through a 5-mL column containing CuWRAM at 2 bed volumes per minute. The experiment was repeated using the same volume of Dowex 43084 (labeled XFS, its alternative name, in Fig. 12). The contents of the sulfuric acid strip solutions reveal that the CuWRAM is more selective and has a higher flow capacity at relatively rapid flow rates. The difference in flow capacity is partially due to the difference in particle size of the two materials (100 pm for CuWRAM and 250-500 pm for XFS). However, we have previously shown that at equal particle sizes and flow rates the silica-polyamine composites have about 80% better flow capacities at 2-bed volumes per minute and at equal particle sizes (see section I.B). 2 ... [Pg.69]

The purified acid is recovered from the loaded organic stream by contacting with water in another countercurrent extraction step. In place of water, an aqueous alkafl can be used to recover a purified phosphate salt solution. A small portion of the purified acid is typically used in a backwashing operation to contact the loaded organic phase and to improve the purity of the extract phase prior to recovery of the purified acid. For vanadium solvent extraction, Hon powder can be added to reduce pentavalent vanadium to quadrivalent and trivalent Hon to divalent at a redox potential of —150 mV. Lube oil extraction plants often use phenol as solvent. Phenol is used because of its solvent power with a wide range of feed stocks and its ease of recovery. Phenol preferentially dissolves aromatic-type hydrocarbons from the feed stock and improves its oxidation stability and to some extent its color. Phenol extraction can be used over the entire viscosity range of lube distillates and deasphalted oils. The phenol solvent extraction separation is primarily by molecular type or composition. In order to accomplish a separation by solvent extraction, it is necessary that two liquid phases be present. In phenol solvent extraction of lubricating oils these two phases are an oil-rich phase and a phenol-rich phase. Tne oil-rich phase or raffinate solution consists of the "treated" oil from which undesirable naphthenic and aromatic components have been removed plus some dissolved phenol. The cyclic steady state SMB performance is characterized by four parameters purity, recovery, solvent consumption, and adsorbent productivity. Extract (raffinate) purity is the ratio between the concentration of the more retained component (less retained) and the total concentration of the two species in the extract (raffinate). The recovery is the amount of the target species obtained in the desired product stream per total amount of the same species fed into the system. Solvent consumption is the total amount of solvent used (in eluent and feed) per unit of racemic amount treated. Liquid solvents are used to extract either desirable or undesirable compounds from a liquid mixture. Solvent extraction processes use a liquid solvent that has a high solvolytic power for certain compounds in the feed mixture. For example, ethylene glycol has a greater affinity for aromatic hydrocarbons and extracts them preferentially from a reformate mixture (a liquid paraffinic and aromatic product from catalytic reforming). Liquid-liquid extraction (also called solvent extraction) is the transfer of a substance (a consolute) dissolved in one liquid to a second liquid (the solvent) that is immiscible with the first liquid or miscible to a very limited degree. This operation is commonly used in fine chemicals manufacture (I) to wash out impurities from a contaminated solution to a solvent in order to obtain a pure solution (raffinate) from which the pure substance will be isolated, and (2) to pull out a desired substance from a contaminated liquid into the solvent leaving impurities in the first liquid. The former operation is typically employed when an organic phase is to be depleted from impurities which are soluble in acidic, alkaline, or neutral aqueous solutions Water or a diluted aqueous solution is then used as the solvent. The pure raffinate is then appropriately processed (e.g. by distillation) to isolate the desired consolute. In the latter version of extraction impurities remain in the first phase.
