Let us consider one more physical phenomenon, which can influence upon PT sensitivity and efficiency. There is a process of liquid s penetration inside a capillary, physical nature of that is not obvious up to present time. Let us consider one-side-closed conical capillary immersed in a liquid. If a liquid wets capillary wall, it flows towards cannel s top due to capillary pressure pc. This process is very fast and capillary imbibition stage is going on until the liquid fills the channel up to the depth l , which corresponds the equality pcm = (Pc + Pa), where pa - atmospheric pressure and pcm - the pressure of compressed air blocked in the channel. [Pg.615]

As a somewhat anecdotal aside, there has been an interesting question as to whether gold is or is not wet by water, with many publications on either side. This history has been reviewed by Smith [119]. The present consensus seems to be that absolutely pure gold is water-wet and that the reports of non wetting are a documentation of the ease with which gold surface becomes contaminated (see Ref. 120, but also 121). As might be expected, this simple picture does not hold perfectly. The coefficient of friction tends to increase with increasing velocity and also is smaller if the pavement is wet [14]. On a wet road, /x may be as small as 0.2, and, in fact, one of the principal reasons for patterning the tread and sides of the tire is to prevent the confinement of a water layer between the tire and the road surface. Similarly, the texture of the road surface is important to the wet friction behavior. One of the main uses of these wet cells is to investigate surface electrochemistry [94, 95]. Place 84 g. of iron filings and 340 ml. of water in a 1 - 5 or 2-litre bolt-head flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer. Heat the mixture to boiling, stir mechanically, and add the sodium m-nitrobenzenesulphonate in small portions during 1 hour. After each addition the mixture foams extensively a wet cloth should be applied to the neck of the flask if the mixture tends to froth over the sides. Replace from time to time the water which has evaporated so that the volume is approximately constant. When all the sodium salt has been introduced, boU the mixture for 20 minutes. Place a small drop of the suspension upon filter paper and observe the colour of the spot it should be a pale brown but not deep brown or deep yellow. If it is not appreciably coloured, add anhydrous sodium carbonate cautiously, stirring the mixture, until red litmus paper is turned blue and a test drop upon filter paper is not blackened by sodium sulphide solution. Filter at the pump and wash well with hot water. Concentrate the filtrate to about 200 ml., acidify with concentrated hydrochloric acid to Congo red, and allow to cool. Filter off the metanilic acid and dry upon filter paper. A further small quantity may be obtained by concentrating the mother liquid. The yield is 55 g. [Pg.589]

Stereoselective cis-dihydroxylation of the more hindered side of cycloalkenes is achieved with silver(I) or copper(II) acetates and iodine in wet acetic acid (Woodward gly-colization J.B. Siddall, 1966 L. Mangoni, 1973 R. Criegee, 1979) or with thallium(III) acetate via organothallium intermediates (E. Glotter, 1976). In these reactions the intermediate dioxolenium cation is supposed to be opened hydrolytically, not by Sn2 reaction. [Pg.128]

The mats are moved along the line to the press loader. When the loader is filled and the press opens to remove the load of freshly pressed boards, the loader pushes the new boards into the unloader and deposits the load of mats on the press platens. The press closes as quickly as possible to the desired panel thickness. More pressure, as much as 4.8—6.9 MPa (700—1000 psi) is required to press high density dry-process hardboard, because the dry fiber exhibits much more resistance to compression and densification than wet fiber. Press temperatures are also higher, in the range of 220—246°C. No screens are used in the dry-process, but the moisture in the mats requires a breathe cycle during pressing to avoid blowing the boards apart at the end of the cycle. Because no screens are used, the products are called smooth-two-sides (S-2-S), in contrast to the wet-process boards, which have a screen pattern embossed into the back side and are known as smooth-one-side (S-l-S). [Pg.389]

Humidification. For wiater operation, or for special process requirements, humidification maybe required (see Simultaneous HEAT and mass transfer). Humidification can be effected by an air washer which employs direct water sprays (see Evaporation). Regulation is maintained by cycling the water sprays or by temperature control of the air or water. Where a large humidification capacity is required, an ejector which direcdy mixes air and water in a no22le may be employed. Steam may be used to power the no22le. Live low pressure steam can also be released directly into the air stream. Capillary-type humidifiers employ wetted porous media to provide extended air and water contact. Pan-type humidifiers are employed where the required capacity is small. A water filled pan is located on one side of the air duct. The water is heated electrically or by steam. The use of steam, however, necessitates additional boiler feed water treatment and may add odors to the air stream. Direct use of steam for humidification also requires careful attention to indoor air quahty. [Pg.362]

Additive packages have been developed which do an exceUent job of preventing IVD. The key to effective operation is to keep the valve wet so that the additive can prevent deposit buildup. Most packages include a combination of detergent/dispersant and a carrier oil or heavy solvent. If no carrier oil is present, then the fuel may evaporate off the valve too rapidly for the package to be effective. When the valves do not rotate, the portion of the valve which has the highest deposit level is the back side which is not constantly wet. [Pg.187]

The general pieces of equipment used in grinding flake mica or mica concentrate into saleable mica products are hammer mills of various types, fluid energy mills, Chaser or Muller mills for wet grinding, and Raymond or WiUiams high side roUer mills. Another method is being developed, called a Duncan mill (f. M. Huber, Inc.), that is similar in many respects to an attrition mill. AH of these mills are used in conjunction with sieves, and all but some types of hammer mills incorporate air classifiers as a part of the circuit. [Pg.289]

Sheet Drying. At a water content of ca 1.2—1.9 parts of water per part of fiber, additional water removal by mechanical means is not feasible and evaporative drying must be employed. This is at best an efficient but cosdy process and often is the production botdeneck of papermaking. The dryer section most commonly consists of a series of steam-heated cylinders. Alternate sides of the wet paper are exposed to the hot surface as the sheet passes from cylinder to cylinder. In most cases, except for heavy board, the sheet is held closely against the surface of the dryers by fabrics of carefuUy controUed permeabiHty to steam and air. Heat is transferred from the hot cylinder to the wet sheet, and water evaporates. The water vapor is removed by way of elaborate air systems. Most dryer sections are covered with hoods for coUection and handling of the air, and heat recovery is practiced in cold climates. The final moisture content of the dry sheet usually is 4—10 wt %. [Pg.8]

Cross-linked finishes are not permanent in the tme sense of the word however, under optimum conditions the finish can last for the usehil life of the material. Wet abrasion during laundering is probably the principal cause of gradual removal of the finish. In order to retain antistatic protection for extended use, an excess of finish is often appHed The extent of chemical interaction between the durable antistatic agents and the fiber substrates to which they are appHed is not perfectiy understood. Certain oxidizing agents such as hypochlorite bleaches tend to depolymerize and remove some durable antistatic finishes. Some of the durable finishes have also produced undesirable side effects on textile materials, ie, harsh hand, discoloration, and loss of tensile properties. [Pg.294]
