Drop tests

Alcohol holdout tests, which are also used to measure aqueous fluid repeUency, iavolve placing drops of aqueous isopropyl alcohol solutions of concentrations 10, 20,. .. 100 wt % on a fabric surface. The rating for the fabric is based on the most concentrated solution that does not penetrate the fabric ia the specified time frame (3M Water RepeUency Test II, Water/Alcohol Drop Test (41) INDA Standard Test 80.6). 

In the 3M Water/Alcohol Drop Test (41), this test is designed to provide a simple, rapid method to assess the aqueous stain resistance of substrates treated with a protective finish.

We test the impact resistance of polymer plaques using the configuration shown in Fig. 8.8. We subject circular injection molded plaques to the shock of a falling weight with a hemispherical impacter. This test is also known as the Dart Drop Test . Samples can fail in a brittle or a ductile manner. Brittle samples often shatter. Ductile samples can split or a small disk may be punched out of their center. This test provides results that are analogous to those obtained from un-notched impact beam testing. 

The four-to-six day duration of the dynamic Wilhelmy tests (wherein equilibrium actually occurred after one day) were much shorter than the times generally required for the sessile drop test. Although the results from these methods may correlate to some extent, they simulate different essential requirements of the catalysts. Attrition loss primarily relates to handling, transport, loading and screening whereas the crush tests simulate the forces imposed on the catalyst in a fixed bed. The drop test simulates the risk of catalyst break-up during loading and pneumatic transport.
