Sheets synthesis 34-39

In 1954 the surface fluorination of polyethylene sheets by using a soHd CO2 cooled heat sink was patented (44). Later patents covered the fluorination of PVC (45) and polyethylene bottles (46). Studies of surface fluorination of polymer films have been reported (47). The fluorination of polyethylene powder was described (48) as a fiery intense reaction, which was finally controlled by dilution with an inert gas at reduced pressures. Direct fluorination of polymers was achieved in 1970 (8,49). More recently, surface fluorinations of poly(vinyl fluoride), polycarbonates, polystyrene, and poly(methyl methacrylate), and the surface fluorination of containers have been described (50,51). Partially fluorinated poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyamides such as nylon have excellent soil release properties as well as high wettabiUty (52,53). The most advanced direct fluorination technology in the area of single-compound synthesis and synthesis of high performance fluids is currently practiced by 3M Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, and by Exfluor Research Corp. of Austin, Texas. [Pg.278]

Other Industrial Applications. High pressures are used industrially for many other specialized appHcations. Apart from mechanical uses in which hydrauhc pressure is used to supply power or to generate Hquid jets for mining minerals or cutting metal sheets and fabrics, most of these other operations are batch processes. Eor example, metallurgical appHcations include isostatic compaction, hot isostatic compaction (HIP), and the hydrostatic extmsion of metals. Other appHcations such as the hydrothermal synthesis of quartz (see Silica, synthetic quartz crystals), or the synthesis of industrial diamonds involve changing the phase of a substance under pressure. In the case of the synthesis of diamonds, conditions of 6 GPa (870,000 psi) and 1500°C are used (see Carbon, diamond, synthetic). [Pg.76]

Methanol Synthesis. AH commercial methanol processes employ a synthesis loop, and Figure 6 shows a typical example as part of the overall process flow sheet. This configuration overcomes equiUbtium conversion limitations at typical catalyst operating conditions as shown in Figure 1. A recycle system that gives high overall conversions is feasible because product methanol and water can be removed from the loop by condensation. [Pg.278]

Quench Converter. The quench converter (Fig. 7a) was the basis for the initial ICl low pressure methanol flow sheet. A portion of the mixed synthesis and recycle gas bypasses the loop interchanger, which provides the quench fractions for the iatermediate catalyst beds. The remaining feed gas is heated to the inlet temperature of the first bed. Because the beds are adiabatic, the feed gas temperature increases as the exothermic synthesis reactions proceed. The injection of quench gas between the beds serves to cool the reacting mixture and add more reactants prior to entering the next catalyst bed. Quench converters typically contain three to six catalyst beds with a gas distributor in between each bed for injecting the quench gas. A variety of gas mixing and distribution devices are employed which characterize the proprietary converter designs. [Pg.279]

Steam-Reforming Natural Gas. Natural gas is the single most common raw material for the manufacture of ammonia. A typical flow sheet for a high capacity single-train ammonia plant is iadicated ia Figure 12. The important process steps are feedstock purification, primary and secondary reforming, shift conversion, carbon dioxide removal, synthesis gas purification, ammonia synthesis, and recovery. [Pg.345]

Early in the synthesis of separation schemes for nonideal Hquid mixtures, it may not be known exactly where in the flow sheet a strategic separation is going to be, only that it is required some place in some form in order to overcome or exploit a particular critical feature. Thus, strategic separations often... [Pg.449]

Some progress has been made in the development of computet aids by chemists for reaction path synthesis, leading to desired complex organic molecules. Synthesis in areas such as complete flow sheeting and control systems is not industrially significant as yet. [Pg.82]

A hierarchical design procedure for process synthesis can be used in conjunction with a flow-sheeting program to analyze, evaluate, and optimize the options (60). The emphasis is on starting with the simplest possible models that will give answers to a particular question quickly so that the questions to be asked at the next decision level can be formulated. At each stage, it is necessary to ensure that the level of detail in the model is sufficient to give rehable information. [Pg.82]

The first methacrylic esters were prepared by dehydration of hydroxyisobutyric esters, prohibitively expensive starting points for commercial synthesis. In 1932 J. W. C. Crawford discovered a new route to the monomer using cheap and readily available chemicals—acetone, hydrocyanic acid, methanol and sulphuric acid— and it is his process which has been used, with minor modifications, throughout the world. Sheet poly(methyl methacrylate) became prominent during World War II for aircraft glazing, a use predicted by Hill in his early patents, and since then has found other applications in many fields. [Pg.399]

Carbon nanotube research was greatly stimulated by the initial report of observation of carbon tubules of nanometer dimensions[l] and the subsequent report on the observation of conditions for the synthesis of large quantities of nanotubes[2,3]. Since these early reports, much work has been done, and the results show basically that carbon nanotubes behave like rolled-up cylinders of graphene sheets of bonded carbon atoms, except that the tubule diameters in some cases are small enough to exhibit the effects of one-dimensional (ID) periodicity. In this article, we review simple aspects of the symmetry of carbon nanotubules (both monolayer and multilayer) and comment on the significance of symmetry for the unique properties predicted for carbon nanotubes because of their ID periodicity. [Pg.27]

Polymer supported xanthene derivatives have been used in the solid phase synthesis of 1-aminophosphinic acids, RCH(NH2)PH(0)0H, <%TL1647> and of C-terminal peptide amides <96JOC6326>. Xanthene units also feature in crown ethers <96JCS(P2)2091>, calixarenes <96JOC5670> and in a flexible template for a P-sheet nucleator <96JOC7408>. [Pg.300]
