Scarring

Acute oral LD q data for nitro alcohols in mice are given in Table 1. Because of their low volatiHty, the nitro alcohols present no vapor inhalation ha2ard. They are nonirritating to the skin and, except for 2-nitro-1-butanol, are nonirritating when introduced as a 1 wt % aqueous solution in the eye of a rabbit. When 0.1 mL of 1 wt % commercial-grade 2-nitro-1-butanol in water is introduced into the eyes of rabbits, severe and permanent corneal scarring results. This anomalous behavior may be caused by the presence of a nitro-olefin impurity in the unpurifted commercial product.

Calcium chloride solutions, typically employed at 2—5% concentration, are used as antispasmodics, diuretics (qv), and in the treatment of tetany. Concentrated solutions of calcium chloride cause erythema, exfoUation, ulceration, and scarring of the skin (39). Injections into the tissue may cause necrosis. If given orally calcium chloride can cause irrita tion to the gastrointestinal tract unless accompanied by a demulcent. There is no pubHshed information on mutagenicity or carcinogenicity caused by calcium ions or calcium chloride. Calcium chloride has been given a toxicity or hazard level 3 (40). Materials in this classification typically have LD q below 400 mg/kg or an LC q below 100 ppm. 

The increased concentrations of K, Ca, Fe, Br, Se and Rb in infarction and scar areas are observed for patient with the recent infarction. For the patients with old infarction the levels of these elements are decreased in the same areas. This reflects the intensity of metabolic processes in the pathological area of myocardium. Additionally, the elevated levels of Se was find out in myocardium of right ventricle in both patients, that may be caused by the increasing the activity of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme. 

Paints and coatings for automobiles have not been immune to damage by air polluhon. Wolff and co-workers (13) found that damage to automobile finishes was the result of scarring by calcium sulfate crystals formed when sulfuric acid in rain or dew reacted with dry deposited calcium.

Volatile There are plastics that contain small quantities of material that boil at processing temperatures, or they may be contaminated by water absorbed from the atmosphere. These volatiles may cause bubbles, a scarred surface, and other defects. Processing methods of removing volatiles are used such as drying materials to be processed, vented plasticator barrels, etc. (Chapter 7, OTHER BEHAVIOR, Drying Plastic).

The inner part of the forearm and the upper back may be used for intradermal injections. The area should be hairless areas near moles, scars, or pigmented skin areas should be avoided. The nurse should cleanse the area in the same manner as for SC and IM injections.
