Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) (Figs. 20.5 and 20.6) The 60% TCA peel has produced similar results in patients in whom phenol is contraindicated or undesired. TCA is a keratocoagulant. TCA may be applied more rapidly than phenol, but it is more likely to produce hypertrophic scarring (Fig. 20.6) [21]. 

There are hardly any studies on trichloroacetic acid alone for chemical peeling in Asian patients. In a study of 15 patients from Iraq, a medium-depth chemical peel using a combination of Jessner s solution followed by the application of 35% trichloroacetic acid was performed for up to three sessions for acne scars. This medium-depth chemical peel was found to be a safe and effective way of treating patients of dark complexion. The side effects noted were transient postin-flammatory hyperpigmentation [14].
