This reversed-phase chromatography method was successfully used in a production-scale system to purify recombinant insulin. The insulin purified by reversed-phase chromatography has a biological potency equal to that obtained from a conventional system employing ion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatographies (14). The reversed-phase separation was, however, followed by a size-exclusion step to remove the acetonitrile eluent from the final product (12,14). [Pg.55]

The intrinsic rejection and maximum obtainable water flux of different membranes can be easily evaluated in a stirred batch system. A typical batch unit (42) is shown in Figure 5. A continuous system is needed for full-scale system design and to determine the effects of hydrodynamic variables and fouling in different module configurations. A typical laboratory/pilot-scale continuous unit using computer control and on-line data acquisition is shown in Figure 6. [Pg.149]

Adsorption. Adsorption (qv) is an effective means of lowering the concentration of dissolved organics in effluent. Activated carbon is the most widely used and effective adsorbent for dyes (4) and, it has been extensively studied in the waste treatment of the different classes of dyes, ie, acid, direct, basic, reactive, disperse, etc (5—22). Commercial activated carbon can be prepared from lignite and bituminous coal, wood, pulp mill residue, coconut shell, and blood and have a surface area ranging from 500—1400 m /g (23). The feasibiUty of adsorption on carbon for the removal of dissolved organic pollutants has been demonstrated by adsorption isotherms (24) (see Carbon, activated carbon). Several pilot-plant and commercial-scale systems using activated carbon adsorption columns have been developed (25—27). [Pg.381]

Corrective Action Application At a Navy facility in Guam, approximately 25 tons of PCB contaminated soil was treated using the KPEG (potassium polyethylene glycol) process. PCB concentrations were reduced from 3000 ppm to less than 5 ppm. Upon completion of treatment using the KPEG process, the soil was neutralized from a pH of 14 to 7. A full-scale system for this process is currently under development. [Pg.147]

The chemical engineer is concerned with the industrial application of processes. This involves the chemical and microbiological conversion of material with the transport of mass, heat and momentum. These processes are scale-dependent (i.e., they may behave differently in small and large-scale systems) and include heterogeneous chemical reactions and most unit operations. Tlie heterogeneous chemical reactions (liquid-liquid, liquid-gas, liquid-solid, gas-solid, solid-solid) generate or consume a considerable amount of heat. However, the course of... [Pg.1117]

The ultimate test, short of constructing a full-scale unit, is to build a small-scale system in which each item to be incorporated in the final device is represented. Such programmes are too specialised to warrant discussion here, and are fully described in the literature... [Pg.1065]

True. The explosive nature of methanerair mixture requires careful operation of large-scale systems and incurs high insurance premiums. [Pg.89]

Although from theoretical considerations biomass yields from methane could be as high as 1.4, in laboratory-scale cultures values of about 1.0 were obtained, and in larger scale systems values were around 0.3-0.6. Methane fermentation also incurs high aeration and cooling costs. [Pg.89]

Dynamic similarity requires geometric and kinematic similarity in addition lo force ratios at corresponding points being equal, involving properties of gravitation, surface tension, viscosity and inertia [8, 21]. With proper and careful application of this principle scale-up from test model lo large scale systems is often feasible and quite successful. Tables 5-... [Pg.313]

Additionally, for previously scaled systems, it is claimed that as new calcite seed crystals flow away from scaled sites, a shift in CaC03 equilibrium occurs, resulting in a continuous descaling action. [Pg.340]

We are also purchasing a new pilot reactor which we intend to automate using the same tools we are using in the lab this reactor will facilitate scale-up, and will allow us to demonstrate the control methods we evolve on a more nearly production-scale system. [Pg.477]

The formation of nanostructures such as nanodot arrays has drawn a great attention due to the feasible applications in a variety of functional structures and nanodevices containing optoelectronic device, information storage, and sensing media [1-3]. The various methods such as self-assembled nanodots from solution onto substrate, strain-induced growth, and template-based methods have been proposed for the fabrication of nanodot arrays on a large area, [4-6]. However, most of these works can be applied to the small scale systems due to the limited material systems. [Pg.361]
