Large-scale complex systems described, 97 development

In 1975 Kuntz has described that the complexes formed from various rhodium-containing precursors and the sulfonated phosphines, TPPDS (2) or TPPTS (3) were active catalysts of hydroformylafion of propene and 1-hexene [15,33] in aqueous/organic biphasic systems with virtually complete retention of rhodium in the aqueous phase. The development of this fundamental discovery into a large scale industrial operation, known these days as the Ruhrchemie-Rhone Poulenc (RCH-RP) process for hydroformylation of propene, demanded intensive research efforts [21,28]. Tire final result of these is characterized by the data in Table 4.2 in comparison with cobalt- or rhodium-catalyzed processes taking place in homogeneous organic phases. [Pg.108]

The CATHy catalysts, like their ruthenium analogues are also active in the reduction of ketones and imines using the formate system [5], Wills has published on the reduction of ketones [9], and Baker on the reduction of imines [6], The development of this process for large-scale use has proven more complex and this will be described elsewhere in this chapter. [Pg.202]

There are a number of membrane reactor systems, which have been studied experimentally, that fall outside the scope of this model, however, including reactors utilizing macroporous non-permselective membranes, multi-layer asymmetric membranes, etc. Models that have been developed to describe such reactors will be discussed throughout this chapter. In the membrane bioreactor literature, in particular, but also for some of the proposed large-scale catalytic membrane reactor systems (e.g., synthesis gas production) the experimental systems utilized are often very complex, in terms of their configuration, geometry, and, of course, reaction and transport characteristics. Completely effective models to describe these reactors have yet to be published, and the development of such models still remains an important technical challenge. [Pg.172]
