Although from theoretical considerations biomass yields from methane could be as high as 1.4, in laboratory-scale cultures values of about 1.0 were obtained, and in larger scale systems values were around 0.3-0.6. Methane fermentation also incurs high aeration and cooling costs. 

In order to act as intercultural mediators, it is vital that managers examine their ovm cultural values and beliefs.

The risk asses sment may include an evaluation of what the risks mean in practice to those effected. This will depend heavily on how the risk is perceived. Risk perception involves peoples beliefs, attitudes, judgements and feelings, as well as the wider social or cultural values that people adopt towards hazards and their benefits. The way in which people perceive risk is vital in the process of assessing and managing risk. Risk perception will be a major determinant in whether a risk is deemed to be acceptable and whether the risk management measures imposed are seen to resolve the problem.

The notion that addicts choose present rewards over future gains or penalties echoes throughout the chapters in Addiction. The commodification of traditional knowledge poses problems that also transcend intellectual property considerations since, in indigenous communities, medicinal plants can have cultural, symbolic and ritual values that go beyond a simple medicinal or economic use. Thus, the cultivation of a plant outside its natural habitat and the capture of its medicinal properties into a commercial product can generate mistrust, inequality and betrayal because the loss of the cultural value is not addressed by any monetary compensation. These problems have been exemplified by the development of Hoodia gordo-nii,46 a sacred life force of the South African San, which was turned into a commercial slimming aid .47... 

It is common for patients initially to experience a change in self-identity. Our culture values the rugged individual who can pull himself up by his bootstraps. Patients may worry that it is a sign of weakness or disability to try medication for an invisible problem. Other patients may express concerns about the cost of medication and wonder how they can afford to pay for it. 

The National Environmental Policy Act (Table I) states that nothing will be put into the environment which has an adverse effect on the health of man, domestic animals, wildlife, vegetation, property or cultural values.
