Safe driving

Instructors who have used this new technology report that trainees develop skills more quickly than with traditional training methods. In refresher training, this new system reinforces defensive driving skills and safe driving habits. Drivers can also check their reaction times and hand-eye coordination. 

Try to think ahead. Anticipate the complexities and consequences of what you want to do. ("Before you build a Roller Derby car to race, I want you tell me some of the safe-driving skills you will need to know.")... 

The EV power requirements depend on the car s end use and assumed acceleration demands. For example, the specifications for safe driving in a mixed ICEV and EV urban traffic of a small compact-type EV have been defined as acceleration from 0 to 50 mph in <20 s. The specific peak-power corresponding to these demands has been calculated as 80-90 wkg for conditions of optimum use of the AC power train (i.e., for constant-power acceleration following the initial period in which the peak-power is attained at the maximum tractive effort ). The majority of near-term and advanced batteries could, at least potentially, meet these demands. 

How does the carrier select drivers (length of experience, safe driving record, etc.) ... 

Acute physical and psychological effects. Marijuana intoxication has an adverse effect on attention span, short-term memory, and psychomotor performance. Anxiety and panic attacks can occur, primarily in new users who are not familiar with marijuanas eflFects. At very high doses, some people experience delusions and hallucinations. There are no cases of fatal marijuana poisoning and humans are very unfikely to be able to ingest a fatal dose. The eflFect of marijuana intoxication impairs motor and cognitive abilities necessary to safely drive a car or operate machinery. The extent to which marijuana is involved in auto accidents is unclear. Many motorists intoxicated with marijuana drive more slowly and carefully and take fewer risks. However, there is an increased risk of accidents after using marijuana, but marijuana alone does not appear to contribute a great deal to accidents. Marijuana in combination with alcohol does. 

The possibility that alcohol-induced deterioration in psychomotor skills (i.e. those associated with safe driving) might be increased by the RIMAs has been studied. Moclobemide appears to have only a minor and clinically unimportant effect. ... 

Let s have a look at an example from pharmacology - the elimination of a dmg from the body. This could be a dmg like Aspirin or Nurofen or even ethanol. In fact, the latter is probably something we all wanted to know at one point in our lives if we had 4 pints of lager in the pub, how long does it take to be under the limit for safe driving again ... 

Provide an even surface for comfortable and safe driving... 

Section 4 Encouraging and Reinforcing Safe Ehdving Behavior — The fourth section of the questionnaire to motor carriers probed their senior management about company practices that encourage and reinforce safe driving. 

Senior management was asked to consider their approaches to rewarding safe drivers and disciplining unsafe drivers. With respect to driver awards, the questionnaire asked managers to identify which personnel/organizational units were rewarded, how frequently they were rewarded, and the specific type of awards used to encourage safe driving. Furthermore, the questionnaire included items on the specific standards/achievements that were used by companies as the basis for the safety awards. 

Leading carriers have established (written) formal driving hiring standards that place the greatest emphasis on an applicant s safe driving record. 

Section 4 Encouraging and Reinforcing Safe Driving Behavior — On the subject of encouraging and reinforcing safe driving behavior, motor carriers rely on two basic management principles, 1) safety rewards, and 2) driver discipline ... 

Safety awards are also presented in order to encourage and reinforce safe driving. Awards are issued on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis with annual being the most common. 

Driver discipline — Carriers feel that disciplining drivers is more important or equally important as rewards in encouraging and reinforcing safe driving behavior. Carriers discipline drivers for poor safety performance when drivers violate Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, violate company safety policies, or demonstrate generally unsafe driving performance. 

Results of the survey in this area show that companies use a variety of technologies to monitor driver performance and promote safe driving. The most common practices are to use I speed regulators on vehicles and engine diagnostics. 

The Company s on-the-road test shall be of sufficient length and duration so that the driver s ability to safely drive in a variety of real-life traffic conditions can be thoroughly and fairly evaluated. 

Make sure you review these requirements. But more importantly, make sure your driver trainers are skilled at evaluating safe driving ability (see Preventing Vehicle Accidents for more information). 

Part 392 establishes basic safe driving (operating) regulations for all commercial motor vehicles. 

So, as the safety professional at your organization, you need to develop standards for safe driving (see Preventing Vehicle Accidents) as well as general workplace safety (see Preventing Workplace Injuries). 

Note The above statistic indicates that safe driving through construction zones needs to be given major emphasis in your defensive driver training. 

A final word on drivers who are unwilling to conform to your safe driving behavior requirements, values, and policies. Any information you receive is data. And all data has value. How you use it is up to you. 

You might have drivers who simply do not possess the necessary safe driving skills — no matter how much training and individual attention you invest. 

Make sure your safe driving training and corrective action processes are thoroughly communicated to all drivers, safety, and operation personnel.

If we cannot realistically adopt a zero-accident standard, what we can do is define and establish a workable company standard for safe driving performance. 

Since you or another representative from the Safety Department are most familiar with your company s safety program and safe driving principles, you or your representative can serve as a guide for the committee — in addition to making any final or deciding vote. 

Just as there are rules and regulations for safe driving, every workplace should have rules for safe behavior. When safety rules are enforced, the work environment is safer and everyone benefits. 

Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials.
