Generally, systems developed in the USA favour a combination of polyethylene with either butyl-rubber or hot-applied mastic adhesives, the latter consisting of a blend of rubber, asphalt and high molecular weight resins. In European and Far East coating plants, epoxy type primers and hard ethylene copolymer adhesives have been successfully employed. [Pg.671]

While this book was in its final preparation stage, two additional types of adhered sheet linings for chemical exposures have come to our attention. One is a sheet with, as the exposed face, a Tedlar(sf film adhered to a layer of rubber-asphalt blend. The sheet is applied with rollers to a substrate surface that has been coated with an adhesive primer. Sheet edges are butted with an adhesive lap strip of Tedlar applied over the joint to protect it. The application of MBRs vary with the system. SBS roof systems have been developed to be applied with hot asphalt, heat or rubber-based adhesives. APP roof systems are commonly applied using heat, but may be applied by cold adhesives such as epoxies or acrylates. [Pg.1091]

Asphalt—mbber is mixed and applied to roadways by several techniques. In one method, mbber and asphalt are mixed at ca 175—220°C for one to two hours. The hot mixture is applied to the roadway and covered with a layer of stone chips to form a chip seal. The mbber cmmb consists of scrap tires ground into particles less than 2 mm in diameter. Rubber-modified asphalt is also used for waterproofing membranes, crack-and-joint sealers, hot-mix binders, and roofing materials. The mbber improves asphalt ductility and increases its softening point. The aggregate adhesive bond is stronger, and the asphalt lasts longer. Production of rubber-modified asphalt has increased from 405 t in 1970 to 27,000 t in 1980 (41). Typically, about 2 t of mbber is used for 1 km of roadway. If it is assumed that asphalt—mbber contains ca 25% mbber and 75% asphalt, the potential demand for scrap mbber would be ca 40,500 t/yr, or ca 2% of the amount available. [Pg.15]

A large apphcation of latex is in blends with asphalt to produce a waterproof membrane on cinder block and concrete walls. Hot asphalt applications had been used for many years in concrete tanks, inner lined with brick for similar service, and also, of course, unlined wood tanks made from timber, and small pickling tanks made by hollowing out cavities in granite blocks. Sheet membrane linings are usually shipped in rolls. Exceptions include plasticized-unplasticized vinyl laminates, specially compounded asphalt and asphalt and rubber compounded sheets, usually shipped flat in cartons or boxes. These are applied to properly prepared surfaces with an adhesive that may be air-cured or heat-cured. At all events, so far as storage is concerned, temperatures above freezing and under 100°F are usually not matters of concern, unless the manufacturer or applicator so advises. Floor underlayments are utilized to produce a level and smooth surface before placing vinyl tile, asphalt tile, rubber tile, or other resilient flooring materials.
