PIPE WRAPPING

A pipe wrapped in newspaper and used as a weapon also goes by a New York name Shmalin. 

In addition to widespread use as a blend in asphalt/rubber sealants for roofing and other construction applications, reclaim rubber adhesives have been used as an insulation adhesive, as a pipe wrap adhesive, and as an ingredient in some pressure sensitive adhesives. Of interest is the fact that virtually every telephone installation in the United States before 1985 that required a cable splice used a reclaim rubber adhesive. 

At that point it was just Seth and myself with a few helpers. The first cylindrical implosions were done at Bruceton. You take a piece of iron pipe, wrap the explosives around it, and ignite it at several points so that you get a converging wave and squash the < linder in. That was the birth of the experimental work on implosion, long before experimental work on the gun method.

There are also a number of patents on even more challenging applications for pipes [12]. For example, ABB claimed a PEEK pipe wrapped in continuous carbon fibre PEEK composite for use as an oilfield riser. Such risers could be several kilometres long and their near neutral buoyancy and excellent environmental resistance would allow recovery of oil from the deep oceans. The specific mechanical properties of composite pipes mean that they may also find uses as drill pipes.

Reclaim Rubber. Rubber recovered from scrap rubber goods, primarily by digestion or mastication at elevated temperatures, consists of soluble hydrocarbon, crosslinked rubber, and about 30% carbon black, plus minor amounts of oil, tackifiers, and curative residues. The rubber content of reclaim derived from tires is a mixture of SBR and NR, while butyl reclaim is derived from inner tubes. One of the principal virtues of reclaim is price. It is used for black friction tape but to a larger extent for duct tapes and pipe wrap tapes. 

Insulating products - Textiles for heat-resistant protective clothing are woven from spinning fiber, but most asbestos insulation products are in the form of paper, paperboard, millboard, and mat from paper-grade fiber. Asbestos provides flexibihty, dimensional stabihty, tear resistance, heat resistance, chemical resistance, moisture resistance, low thermal conductivity, and high electrical resistivity. Products include pipe wrap, thermal insulation in appliances, and electrical and heat insulation in electronics. 

Butyl and polyisobutylene are used for paper adhesives, laminating polymer fihn, pressure sensitive adhesives, pipe wrap, and electrical tape. Butyl latex adhesives can be formulated for a variety of special use foil/paper laminates, labels, plywood/polyolefin laminates and pressure sensitive...
