Asphalt roads

The conditions of pyrolysis either as low or high temperature carbonization, and the type of coal, determine the composition of Hquids produced, known as tars. Humic coals give greater yields of phenol (qv) [108-95-2] (up to 50%), whereas hydrogen-rich coals give more hydrocarbons (qv). The whole tar and distillation fractions are used as fuels and as sources of phenols, or as an additive ia carbonized briquettes. Pitch can be used as a biader for briquettes, for electrode carbon after coking, or for blending with road asphalt (qv). [Pg.159]

Asphalt concrete is properly proportioned to resist the potentially damaging effects in the road. Asphalt concrete paving mixtures should be evaluated for the following properties stability, flow, air voids, stripping resistance, resilient modulus, compacted density, and unit weight. Table 4.18 provides a list of standard laboratory tests that are presently used to evaluate the mix design or expected performance of fresh and hardened asphalt concrete. [Pg.181]

Asphalt (referred to as bitumen in some parts of the world) is produced from the distillation residuum. In addition to road asphalt, a variety of asphalt grades for roofing and waterproofing are also produced. Sulfur is one of the four major commodities of the chemical industry. The other three are limestone, coal, and salt. Most sulfur that is produced is used to manufacture sulfuric acid (HjSO ). Forty million tons are produced each year in the manufacture of fertilizers, lead-acid batteries, gunpowder, desiccants (drying agent), matches, soaps, plastics, bleaching agents, rubber, road asphalt binders, insecticides, paint, dyes, medical ointment, and other pharmaceutical products, among many, many other uses. The road asphalt used in this study was obtained from the road as a fresh sample. The road asphalt is composed of asphaltenes (GPC peak at lOOA and petroleum residual oils (15) (GPC peak at n-C QHgo). The GPC of road asphalt is shown in Figure 9. Since petroleum asphaltenes cannot be separated by a lOOA pore size gel column, the asphaltene appears without any separation at the total size exclusion limit of the column. But the nonasphaltene components are separated showing a peak at n-C QHg2. Heavy oils and residua are those feedstocks that are less desirable for conversion to liquid fuels. However, the depletion of the reserves of conventional petroleum has brought about an interest in the conversion of the heavier feedstocks. It has also been realized that any degree of self-sufficiency would necessitate the use of heavy oil and bitumen. There also has been a concerted effort to focus on bottom-of-the-barrel processing in which residua are converted to distillate liquid fuels. The volatile products from the soaking drum enter the fractionator where the distillates are fractionated into desired product oil streams, including a heavy gas oil fraction. The cracked gas product is compressed and used as refinery fuel gas after sweetening. The cracked oil product after hydrotreating is used as fluid catalytic cracking or hydrocracker feedstock. A substantial fraction of the coal tar produced continues to be used as fuel as well as for road asphalt and roofing asphalt. The adhesion of asphalt to the mineral aggregate is a fundamental property of road asphalt. Once the adhesion deteriorates, the surface becomes unstable and unusable. Petroleum asphalt is used extensively as a binder in concrete road paving, hence road asphalt. Mixed with asphalt, coal tar pitch makes exceptional road surfaces that resist oils, are non-skid, adhere excellently to stone, and provide weathered hard surfaces. Cutback asphalt is asphalt dissolved in and made less viscous by a solvent (usually a petroleum distillate) allowing easier application in road repair and waterproofing.
