Units of weight

Pressure defined as force per unit area is usually expressed in terms of familiar units of weight-force and area or the height of a column of hq-uid that produces a like pressure at its base. Process pressuremeasuring devices may be divided into three groups (1) those that are based on the measurement of the height of a liquid column, (2) those that are based on the measurement of the distortion of an elastic pressure chamber, and (3) electrical sensing devices.

Fiber denier It is a unit of weight expressing the size or coarseness but particularly the fineness of a continuous fiber or yarn. The weight in grams of 9000 m (30,000 ft) is one denier. The lower the denier, the finer the fiber, yam, etc. One denier equals about 40 micron. Sheer women s hosiery usually runs 10 to 15 denier. Commercial work 12 to 15 denier fiber is generated. 

The metric system uses decimals (or the decimal system). In the metric system, the gram is the unit of weight, the liter the unit of volume, and the meter the unit of lengtii. 

The units of weight in the apotiiecaries system are grains, drams, and ounces. The units of volume are minims, fluid drams, and fluid ounces. The units of measurement in this system are not based on exact measurements. 

When pushed to the limit by overriding human health concerns, residue chemists have achieved detection limits of Ippt (Ingkg ) or even into the low ppqr (1 pg kg ) range. An example at the 1 ppt level is provided by methods for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD) in milk and TCDD in adipose tissue. Eor relatively clean matrices such as water and air, preconcentration on solid-phase adsorbents followed by GC or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) can provide detection limits of 1 ng m and less for air (examples in Majewski and Capel ) and 1 ngL and less for water (examples in Larson et A summary of units of weight and concentration used to express residue data is given in Table 1.
