Resin processability

After cleavage the reaction mass is a mixture of phenol, acetone, and a variety of other products such as cumylphenols, acetophenone, dimethyl-phenylcarbinol, a-methylstyrene, and hydroxyacetone. It may be neutralised with a sodium phenoxide solution (20) or other suitable base or ion-exchange resins. Process water may be added to facilitate removal of any inorganic salts. The product may then go through a separation and a wash stage, or go direcdy to a distillation tower. 

Coloring and Decorating. Commercial pigments that are thermally stable at the resin processing temperature maybe used. Pigments maybe dry-blended with the resin, or ETFE pellets may be blended with color concentrates, which are available ia pellet form. 

The chemical industry manufactures a large number of antioxidants (qv) as well as uv stabilizers and their mixtures with other additives used to facilitate resin processing. These companies include American Cyanamid, BASE, Ciba—Geigy, Eastman Chemical, Elf Atochem, Enichem, General Electric, Hoechst—Celanese, Sandoz, and Uniroyal, among others. The combined market for these products in the United States exceeded 900 million in 1994 and will reach 1 billion in the year 2000. 

To improve the end use performance and make the processability easy, control of MW and MWD as well as the use of.more than one comonomer has been reported for LLDPE [28]. Union Carbide s high MW-LLDPE with broad MWD is a 1-hexene-based resin, and its film provides superior (about 30-50% higher) tensile strength, puncture resistance, and dart impact strength than conventional 1-hexene-based resin, but with lower tear resistance in the transverse direction. The broad MWD makes the resin processability easy on the conventional extruder. 

The pilot plant stage Is vital in the scale-up of any new resin process, and in this paper we discuss the design philosophy of pilot plants and then describe two fully Instrumented and computer data logged reactors. Some indication is given of the use of the extracted data for both modelling and scale up. Both controlled and data logged parameters are tabulated and an example of data extraction for heat balance is illustrated. 

Additives are needed not only to make resins processable and to improve the properties of the moulded product during use. As the scope of plastics has increased, so has the range of additives for better mechanical properties, resistance to heat, light and weathering, flame retardancy, electrical conductivity, etc. The demands of packaging have produced additive systems to aid the efficient production of film, and have developed the general need for additives which are safe for use in packaging and other applications where there is direct contact with food or drink.

One such process involves the thermal decomposition of a diazo compound to give an acid that cross-links phenol formaldehyde resins upon heating, similar to the conventional UV initiated plates used in the industry (Figure 4.3), but other sensitisation methods are also used (see section 4.5). It is also possible to produce plates in a dry resin process by ablation or phase change methods. 

Block copolymers based on nitrile rubber and on epoxy and phenolic resins and on polystyrene (50-54) have been intensively studied in Russia The generated block copolymers were investigated by turbidimetric and IR methods. Unfomuilated poly(vinyl acetal) resins form hard, unpliable materials which are difficult to process without using solvents or plasticizers. Plasticizers aid resin processing, lower the glass-transition temperature, Th, and can profoundly change other physical properties of the resins. 

The resin processed at 200°C reaches 100% cure because the glass transition temperature of fully cured epoxy is 190°C, less than the processing temperature.
