Measurement of Whiteness. The Ciba-Geigy Plastic White Scale is effective in the visual assessment of white effects (79), but the availabihty of this scale is limited. Most evaluations are carried out (ca 1993) by instmmental measurements, utilising the GIF chromaticity coordinates or the Hunter Uniform Color System (see Color). Spectrophotometers and colorimeters designed to measure fluorescent samples must have reversed optics, ie, the sample is illuminated by a polychromatic source and the reflected light passes through the analy2er to the detector. 

The chemical industry manufactures a large number of antioxidants (qv) as well as uv stabilizers and their mixtures with other additives used to facilitate resin processing. These companies include American Cyanamid, BASE, Ciba—Geigy, Eastman Chemical, Elf Atochem, Enichem, General Electric, Hoechst—Celanese, Sandoz, and Uniroyal, among others. The combined market for these products in the United States exceeded 900 million in 1994 and will reach 1 billion in the year 2000. 

Ophthalmic dmg dehveiy systems (qv) have been developed to dehvei controlled dmg quantities for a prolonged time (up to seven days) to the eye, eg, pilocarpine [92-13-7J (17). Alza Corp. in conjunction with Ciba-Geigy Corp. originally marketed such a product known as Ocusert to treat glaucoma. 

However, Ciba-Geigy has introduced (31,32) a type of phosphine-based photoinitiator. In general, the compound can be described as a bis(acyl)phosphine oxide and is prepared by the reaction of a monoaLkylphosphine with a substituted ben2oyl chloride (33). The composition of the first commercial product is proprietary. 

In 1993 the five principal producers of organic pigments in the United States were BASF Cotp., Ciba-Geigy Cotp., Hoechst Celanese Cotp., Miles Inc. (Bayer), and Sun Chemical Cotp.
