This section presents three examples that show how to implement various forms of regression analysis in Excel. The topics considered are linear regression, nonlinear regression, and analysis of factorial design. All examples are based on real data obtained from experiments. An excellent example of work of this type is given by the investigations of Benson and co-workers [127, 128]. They found, for example, a value of = 276 ergs/cm for sodium chloride. Accurate calorimetry is required since there is only a few calories per mole difference between the heats of solution of coarse and finely divided material. The surface area of the latter may be determined by means of the BET gas adsorption method (see Section XVII-5). 

Surface science studies of corrosion phenomena are excellent examples of in situ characterization of surface reactions. In particular, the investigation of corrosion reactions with STM is promising because not only can it be used to study solid-gas interfaces, but also solid-liquid interfaces. 

With spectroscopic detection of the products, the angular distribution of the products is usually not measured. In principle, spectroscopic detection of the products can be incorporated into a crossed-beam scattering experiment of the type described in section B2.3.2. There have been relatively few examples of such studies because of the great demands on detection sensitivity. The recent work of Keil and co-workers (Dhannasena et al [16]) on the F + H2 reaction, mentioned in section B2.3.3, is an excellent example of the implementation...

The remarks of this and the last section are only a small fraction of what might be said about these important materials. We have commented on some aspects of the polymerization processes and of the polymers themselves that have a direct bearing on the concepts discussed here and elsewhere in this volume. This material provides an excellent example of the symbiosis between theoretical and application-oriented points of view. Each stimulates and reinforces the other with new challenges, although it must be conceded that many industrial processes reach a fairly high degree of empirical refinement before the conceptual basis is quantitatively developed. 

The known binary compounds of sulfur and fluorine range in character from ephemeral to rock-like and provide excellent examples of the influence of electronic and stmctural factors on chemical reactivity. These marked differences are also reflected in the diversified technological utiUty. 

Another problem with this approach is common mode failures. A common mode failure is a single event which could lead to the simultaneous failure of several components at the same time. An excellent example of this is a power failure, which could lead to many simultaneous failures. Frequendy, the common mode failure has a higher probabiUty than the failure of the iadividual components, and can drastically decrease the resulting reUabiUty. 

The modem approach to wastewater treatment, protection of the oxygen resources of the receiving waters, requires that all aspects of the problem be addressed, ie, the systems approach. The Ohio River Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) is an excellent example of basin-wide management dealing with situations that involve several poUtical entities. This approach has been adopted in several other regions. 

Correlation of all aspects of the test method with the practical system of interest is always important. The test used for dairy cleaning is an excellent example (116). Milk is used to tag the soil with radioactive Ca by an exchange with radioactive CaCl2. This treatment is apphed to stainless steel planchets by suspending the planchets in milk under actual pasteurizing conditions. 

Bacteriophage repressor proteins provide excellent examples of sequence-specific interactions between the side chains of a protein and bases lining the floor of the major groove of B-DNA. As we shall see, to fit the protein s recognition module into this groove it has to be made even wider in other words, the B-DNA has to be distorted. 

The elegant genetic studies by the group of Charles Yanofsky at Stanford University, conducted before the crystal structure was known, confirm this mechanism. The side chain of Ala 77, which is in the loop region of the helix-turn-helix motif, faces the cavity where tryptophan binds. When this side chain is replaced by the bulkier side chain of Val, the mutant repressor does not require tryptophan to be able to bind specifically to the operator DNA. The presence of a bulkier valine side chain at position 77 maintains the heads in an active conformation even in the absence of bound tryptophan. The crystal structure of this mutant repressor, in the absence of tryptophan, is basically the same as that of the wild-type repressor with tryptophan. This is an excellent example of how ligand-induced conformational changes can be mimicked by amino acid substitutions in the protein. 

Perhaps the best examples to illustrate the analysis strength of XPD and AED are the epitaxial growth modes of deposited overlayers. Here, the structure and chemistry of an overlayer, or the new interface, will influence the properties of the film. To control such effects, an understanding of the basic structure and chemistry is essential. Epitaxial Cu on Ni (001) is an excellent example for demonstrating the...

This outline case-history is an excellent example of a parepisteme which began as a metallurgical curiosity and developed, at a leisurely pace, into a well-understood phenomenon, from which it became, at a much accelerated pace, an important industrial process. 

We will return to the aromatic stabilization of benzene in more detail in Chapter 9, but substituted benzenes provide excellent examples of how proper use of the resonance concept can be valuable in predicting reactivity. Many substituents can be readily classified... 

There are many excellent examples of experiments using isotopic labeling in both organic chemistry and biochemistry. An interesting example is the case of lydroxylation of the amino acid phenylalanine which is carried out by the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase.
