The resulting discoveries may provide a broad range of solutions or products. For example, invention may result from basic research and development efforts directed toward products which ate essential to basic commercial efforts. Alternatively, invention may result in products or appHcations which add value to basic commercial products that ate already in existence. Inventions may also be used to assist an individual or company in commercial efforts toward developing a defensive posture in any given marketplace. When patented, appHcations may also provide an extended opportunity to Hcense or market the patent without the actual production of a product by the inventor. [Pg.26]

The initial research effort may prove to be a broad spectmm of apphcations or solutions to the original problem that in turn provide any number of inventions. When efforts move toward reducing the invention to practice and refining the invention so that it proves to be commercially marketable, certain apphcations may prove to be unfeasible or commercially impractical. As a result, only one apphcation, eg, the creation of a given pattern on the surface of the automobile tire, may ultimately prove commercially marketable. However, ah the solutions which are developed and considered over the research and development process may comprise inventions that are worthy of disclosure and claiming in a patent. An apphcation which is not commercially viable today may become viable within the seventeen-year lifetime of a patent. [Pg.30]

There are two aspects of this program that will effect the research and development investment decision. First, the costs of premanufacture notification (including testing costs) will increase the investment in R D necessary to develop and market new chemicals. The health and safety properties of a chemical must now be considered an intrinsic part of the new chemical development process, right alongside consideration of the substances commercial properties. Both are equal parts of the "total product". Tb the extent that this results in increased testing for health and environmental effects, the amount of investment required to achieve a given level of output from R D will also rise. [Pg.169]

Improper drug usage that results in violative residues can cause the FDA to revoke or restrict a marketing license. Fear of this has resulted in drug companies that develop fewer new products. New product development is an expensive and time-consuming process, since it often takes several years of successful marketing for a new product to recover research and development expenses. Costs... [Pg.503]

Uncovering this information for an established product is reasonably routine using conventional market research techniques. The results obtained will be directly proportional to the effort input since there is no way that I know of to extrapolate to a universe from a research sample. After the information is gathered, it would be normal to turn the product over to the next marketing activity for the development effort required prior to the sale. [Pg.102]
