John Raven Johnson, known as Jack Johnson to all his friends, was a member of the first Board of Directors of Organic Syntheses when it was incorporated in the state of New York, December 11, 1939 He continued membership for about 20 years Prior to this, Jack served for about 8 years on the Active Board of Editors, soliciting preparations and checking them He was Editor-in-Chief of two annual volumes, Vol XVI (1936) and Vol XIX (1939) He also served on the Advisory Board of Editors until his death...

The principle application of XRF thin-film analysis is in the simultaneous determination of composition and thickness. The technique has been used for the routine analysis of single-layer films since 1977 and multiple-layer films since 1986. Two main sources of publications in the fields are the annual volumes of Advances in X-Ray Analysis by Plenum Press, New York, and the Journal of X-Ray Spectrometry by Heyden and Sons, London. Typical examples on the analysis of single-layer films and multiple-layer films are used to illustrate the capabilities of the technique.

Traditionally, a common solution to the problem of matching relatively higher levels of technical support with lower chemical volumes for these smaller customers has been via a one- to three-year, fully inclusive product and services contract. Annual Volume 71 contains 30 checked and edited experimental procedures that illustrate important new synthetic methods or describe the preparation of particularly useful chemicals. This compilation begins with procedures exemplifying three important methods for preparing enantiomerically pure substances by asymmetric catalysis. The preparation of (R)-(-)-METHYL 3-HYDROXYBUTANOATE details the convenient preparation of a BINAP-ruthenium catalyst that is broadly useful for the asymmetric reduction of p-ketoesters. Catalysis of the carbonyl ene reaction by a chiral Lewis acid, in this case a binapthol-derived titanium catalyst, is illustrated in the preparation of METHYL (2R)-2-HYDROXY-4-PHENYL-4-PENTENOATE. The enantiomerically pure diamines, (1 R,2R)-(+)- AND (1S,2S)-(-)-1,2-DIPHENYL-1,2-ETHYLENEDIAMINE, are useful for a variety of asymmetric transformations hydrogenations, Michael additions, osmylations, epoxidations, allylations, aldol condensations and Diels-Alder reactions. Promotion of the Diels-Alder reaction with a diaminoalane derived from the (S,S)-diamine is demonstrated in the synthesis of (1S,endo)-3-(BICYCLO[2.2.1]HEPT-5-EN-2-YLCARBONYL)-2-OXAZOLIDINONE. 

In 2005, a Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) was enacted in the United States, which requires the annual volume of biofuels to be blended into gasoline to increase to 7.5 billion gallons (28 billion litres) by 2012. The mandatory Alternative Fuel Standard (AFS) from 2007 further requires 35 billion gallons (132 billion litres) of renewable and alternative fuels in 2017.

In theory, since the absolute water vapor content of air reduces as the temperature sinks or the altitude rises, the volume of precipitation should decline. Yet the opposite is the case, particularly in mountainous regions in the temperate latitudes here the annual volumes of precipitation generally tend to rise with the altitude. This is the result, on the one hand, of higher wind speeds at higher altitudes, which cause a relatively large shift in humid air masses. On the other hand, precipitation occurs more frequently and often at a much greater intensity. 

The enormous increase in the rate of accumulation of knowledge witnessed during the past few years now makes any attempt at comprehensive coverage of chemistry within the compass of a single annual volume, such as The Chemical Society Annual Reports, unattainable both in terms of reasonable size and cost.
