In other parts of the world, the market is very different. For example, in southeast Asia the largest demand is for refreshing products, such as water ices. Ice cream comes in flavours that seem very strange and exotic to Western palates - for example green tea and red bean ice cream in Japan, sweet corn ice cream in Malaysia, chilli ice cream in Indonesia and sesame seed ice cream in Korea. 

Turpentine Oil. The world s largest-volume essential oil, turpentine [8006-64-2] is produced ia many parts of the world. Various species of piaes and balsamiferous woods are used, and several different methods are appHed to obtain the oils. Types of turpentines include dry-distiUed wood turpentine from dry distillation of the chopped woods and roots of pines steam-distilled wood turpentine which is steam-distilled from pine wood or from solvent extracts of the wood and sulfate turpentine, which is a by-product of the production of sulfate ceUulose. From a perfumery standpoint, steam-distilled wood turpentine is the only important turpentine oil. It is rectified to yield pine oil, yellow or white as well as wood spirits of turpentine. Steam-distilled turpentine oil is a water-white mobile Hquid with a refreshing warm-balsamic odor. American turpentine oil contains 25—35% P-pinene (22) and about 50% a-pinene (44). European and East Indian turpentines are rich in a-pinene (44) withHtfle P-pinene (22), and thus are exceUent raw materials... 

Over 68 aerosol products containing isopropyl alcohol solvent have been reported (145). Aerosol formulations include hair sprays (146), floor detergents (147), shoe poHshes (148), insecticides (149,150), bum ointments (151), window cleaners, waxes and poHshes, paints, automotive products (eg, windshield deicer), insect repellents, flea and tick spray, air refreshers, disinfectants, veterinary wound and pinkeye spray, first-aid spray, foot fungicide, and fabric-wrinMe remover (152) (see Aerosols). 

A program to train drivers and other handlers in the safe handling of the products, to refresh that training regularly, and to use only certified safe drivers is another way of making transportation inherently safer.

Magnesium was known in ancient times, but it was not identified as an element until much later. OC-Terpineol (9) can be readily acetylated to its acetate using acetic anhydride (119). Ot-Terpinyl acetate [80-26-2] has a sweet, herbaceous, refreshing odor of the beigamot-lavender type and is used in scenting soaps and other household products such as cleansers and polishes. The selling price of terpinyl acetate in 1995 was 3.96/kg (45). 

Lewandowski and Ollis have proposed a simple kinetic model describing the transient photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic contaminants [50]. The model considered three chemical species an aromatic contaminant, preadsorbed onto the catalyst in the dark and refreshed continuously from the gas phase a strongly bound, recalcitrant reaction intermediate and final reaction products (CO or CO2), assumed for simplicity to be strictly gas-phase species. The seeds of the Brazilian plant Paullinia cupana (Sapindaceae) are used to make a stimulant drink. Crushed seeds are mixed with water to a paste, which is then sun dried. Portions of this are then boiled with hot water to provide a refreshing drink. The principal constituent, previously called guaranine, has been shown to be identical to caffeine, and the seeds may contain 3-5%. Small amounts of theophylline (0-0.25%) and theobromine (0.02-0.06%) are also present. Guarana is widely available as tablets and capsules, or as extracts, in health food shops where it is promoted to relieve mental and physical fatigue. Labels on such products frequently show the active constituent to be guaranine, but may not indicate that this is actually caffeine.

L-Tartaric acid is an abundant constituent of many fruits such as grapes and bananas and exhibits a slightly astringent and refreshing sour taste. It is one of the main acids found in wine. It is added to other foods to give a sour taste and is normally used with other acids such as citric acid and malic acid as an additive in soft drinks, candies, and so on. It is produced by acid hydrolysis of calcium tartrate, which is prepared from potassium tartrate obtained as a by-product during wine production. Optically active tartaric acid is used for the chiral resolution of amines and also as an asymmetric catalyst.
