Environmental stewardship

The primary goals of the project were to provide leadership in environmental stewardship and flexibility in regulation as an alternative to the command and control approach enumerated in the Cluster Rules (promulgated in 1998). The project, designated International Paper Effluent Improvements Project, was conducted at the International Paper (IP) Androscoggin Paper Mill in Jay, Maine (Figure 21.9) between the project start date of July 29, 2000, and its formal conclusion on December 29, 2004.81... 

I believe that nuclear energy must be part of a comprehensive integrated discussion about addressing our national and multinational goals in energy supply and security, environmental stewardship, and economic development. 

The least tangible of the economic factors that might be considered in evaluating pollution prevention projects are gronped into the third tier of costs. Consumer responses to improved product quality or improved corporate image, employee responses to improved environmental stewardship, and potential improvements in worker health and safety due to pollution prevention could all be considered. Such factors are even more difficult to quantitatively evalnate than tier 1 and tier 2 costs. 

As a result of modern agricultural technology and farmer trial and error, great progress has been made toward the development of systems that provide long-term sustainability with reasonable use of agricultural chemicals. Farmers are concerned about weed control, weather, soil conditions, crop yield, and environmental stewardship. Alternatives to herbicides often come with costs or tradeoffs, such as increased soil erosion, lowered operational efficiency, more land needed, or reduced profits.

This texts authors personal chemical plant experiences include training needs checklists for both new salaried and new chemical process operators. These checklists include an entire array of personnel safety, process safety, and Department ofTransportation and environmental stewardship focus points. Unfortunately, unauthorized and inept changes can ruin products, equipment, reputations, and more, so MOC refresher training must be conducted more frequently. A yearly refresher course on MOC is a condition of employment. I am familiar with a course that is a locally developed, computer-based training module.

The back-to-nature ethic embodied in both Russian ideals about the organic life and dachniki s activities contributes an important comparative example to understandings of environmental and nature movements in other parts of the world. Russians ideas about environmental stewardship invert the expected relationship between person and land, so that nature is understood to care for and protect people. Yet this does not absolve individuals from responsible behavior, even though what constitutes responsible action might seem at odds with the goals of environmental conservation. As a result, while popular opinion in Russia might hold that litter and fires in forests are undesirable, the perpetuation of such practices is understandable within the logic of a philosophy that sees nature as the one space where the normal rules and structures do not apply. 

The book is intended for a primary audience comprised of professionals in the chemical industries, including those designated managers in business, research, and development, operations, health, safety and environment, security, and sustainable development. Yet, managers from other industries in the value chain of chemical companies will benefit from this text. Future decision-makers, such as students, are provided with a framework with which to lead in a world where social and environmental stewardship skills are just as important as technical, financial or marketing skills. 

Sustainable development is a complex concept that incorporates and integrates the concepts of environmental stewardship, economic growth, and social progress. These are considered interrelated factors around which one optimizes to contribute to the growth and even to the survivability of the business enterprise. Because sustainable development is, by its nature, interdisciplinary and cross-functional, frameworks have emerged to help companies align their stakeholders around common concepts and integrate these broad concepts into action, enterprisewide. 

Evolution of Costs. From a sustainability perspective, the TCA methodology should account for both internal corporate costs and societal costs. In the conventional business model (Fig. 6.12a), a company invests on a project when the projected revenues are greater than the projected costs to the company. However, to reflect environmental stewardship and social responsibility, a truly sustainable company should make considerations beyond the conventional business model... 

Although Responsible Care raised the bar and provided a common framework for chemical companies on environmental stewardship, a large (and possibly growing) gap exists between leaders and laggards within the industry on sustainability. 

It may be that some companies are using environmental stewardship as a proxy for sustainability, which indicates a lack of understanding concerning the latter. 

DuPont views sustainable growth as an outgrowth of its corporate values safety and health, high ethical standards, environmental stewardship, and treating people... 

Increased environmental stewardship can lead to higher attention from institutional buyers and marketing of products.
