Ranee et al. (2005) conducted a questionnaire-based survey of food allergy in 2716 school children in France. Four cases of molluscan shellfish allergy were reported to mussels, snails, and oysters among this group. Thus, the self-reported prevalence of molluscan shellfish allergy in this population of children was 0.15%.

Oulu Regional Institute of Occupational Health carried out a questionnaire-based survey accompanied by health check ups performed by a nurse in 1986 and 1988 in northern Finland (Nayha and Hassi 1993). In 1986, altogether 2705 (73%) of 3720 male reindeer herders participated in the survey. The material in the study consisted of all Finnish reindeer herders participating to herding more than 1 h per year. The mean age of the respondents was 42.9 years. A survey of computer use in university courses has been carried out by Miles and Francis 149). Due to poor response rate of a Web-based questionnaire, the findings were skewed toward those faculty members who were using computers in their course. The most widely used application among the respondents was the spreadsheet, while the use of molecular modeling, and symbolic mathematics software lagged behind. The authors recommended that teachers should develop more computer-based activities, exploit fully the Web resources, and transfer effectively technical skills. They also provided a list of relevant Web sites, but in the time elapsed since that publication, the currently available Web material must be greatly enhanced, both in terms of number of materials available and in terms of quality of content. 

These calculations are based on the 35 countries participating in the ESPAD School surveys in 2003 as well as Spain. The present report was prepared by a coordinating committee made up of the chairmen of the five panels involved in earlier reports, epidemiologists who had served on those panels, and one newly appointed person. It is based largely on the work of Robert Keehn of the National Research Council s Medical Follow-up Agency, which had primary responsibility for conducting a questionnaire survey of test subjects to evaluate aspects of their current health, family status, and lifestyle. 

Each computer table consists of several panels representing current age categories in 1984 (the survey year) and a "total" panel representing the sum of all age groups. The responses to the various questions of the questionnaire are defined by the labels in the left margin. Table 9 deals with whether the volunteers requested information about the results of the study. The percentages are based on column totals for a given panel. 

Qualitative information on exposure can be obtained from study subjects using questionnaires or interviews. Experts such as occupational hygienists can evaluate the exposure by walk-through surveys, detailed workplace investigations using validated checklists or judgements based on their experience.
