Responsibility primary

This does display the three elements of real behavior, an instantaneous elastic response, primary creep (retarded elastic response) and secondary creep (permanent deformation). However, the fit to real data is not good and again it is because real materials have behavior that is characterized by a spectrum of relaxation times. [Pg.462]

Isolated deficiencies of methylcobalamin or of 5 -deoxyadenosylcobalamin result in homocystinuria or methylmalonic aciduria respectively, whereas deficiencies in the earlier reductase steps result in combined disorders. Intrinsic factor deficiency also leads to combined methylmalonic aciduria and homocystinuria because of the low serum vitamin B12 levels, but the urinary concentrations recorded are only moderately increased in comparison to those encountered in methylmalonic aciduria due to primary enzyme deficiencies. Defects in vitamin B12 transport, TCI and TCII deficiency do not appear to produce abnormal organic or amino acidurias. Deficiencies of intrinsic factor or of ileal absorption of vitamin B12 respond clinically and biochemically to physiological doses (1-5 fig day ) of vitamin B12 given intravenously or intramuscularly, whereas deficiencies in transport proteins require pharmacological doses (>500 pg day ). The involvement of 5 -deoxyadenosylcobalamin in methylmalonate metabolism also suggests the possibility of vitamin Bi2-responsive primary methylmalonic aciduria, and this is discussed further below. [Pg.315]

Application of the exact continuum analysis of dispersion forces requires significant calculations and the knowledge of the frequency spectmm of the material dielectric response over wavelengths X = 2irc/j/ around 10-10 nm. Because of these complications, it is common to assume that a primary absorption peak at one frequency in the ultraviolet, j/uv. dominates the dielectric spectrum of most materials. This leads to an expression for the dielectric response... [Pg.235]

Cyclodextrins are macrocyclic compounds comprised of D-glucose bonded through 1,4-a-linkages and produced enzymatically from starch. The greek letter which proceeds the name indicates the number of glucose units incorporated in the CD (eg, a = 6, /5 = 7, 7 = 8, etc). Cyclodextrins are toroidal shaped molecules with a relatively hydrophobic internal cavity (Fig. 6). The exterior is relatively hydrophilic because of the presence of the primary and secondary hydroxyls. The primary C-6 hydroxyls are free to rotate and can partially block the CD cavity from one end. The mouth of the opposite end of the CD cavity is encircled by the C-2 and C-3 secondary hydroxyls. The restricted conformational freedom and orientation of these secondary hydroxyls is thought to be responsible for the chiral recognition inherent in these molecules (77). [Pg.64]

Because of the mixture of VOCs in the atmosphere, the composition of smog reaction products and intermediates is extremely complex. formed via reaction 16, is important because when dissolved in cloud droplets it is an important oxidant, responsible for oxidising SO2 to sulfuric acid [7664-93-9] H2SO4, the primary cause of acid precipitation. The oxidation of many VOCs produces acetyl radicals, CH CO, which can react with O2 to produce peroxyacetyl radicals, CH2(C0)02, which react with NO2... [Pg.372]

In the United States, more than 16.3 x 10 kg of human-inedible raw materials are available each year, and the rendering industry is a valuable asset in diverting these into valuable ingredients for use primarily in animal foods (4). The three largest meat packers are responsible for nearly four-fifths of aU red meat production (5) and enormous amounts of rendered meat meal and animal fat. Three broiler producers account for about 40% of the total broiler production. American Proteins, Inc. (RosweU, Georgia), the world s largest processor of poultry by-products, produces more than 450,000 t of poultry meal, feather meal, and poultry fat each year. It also produces more than 100,000 t of fish meal, fish oil, and fish products each year. Pish meal production worldwide in 1986 was estimated at 6.23 x 10 t, which with the 125 x 10 t of meat and bone meal plus 6.67 x 10 t of feather meal and poultry by-product meal (6) is the primary source of animal proteins used by the pet food industry. [Pg.150]

Neopentyl glycol, or 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol [126-30-7] (1) is a white crystalline soHd at room temperature, soluble ia water, alcohols, ethers, ketones, and toluene but relatively iasoluble ia alkanes (1). Two primary hydroxyl groups are provided by the 1,3-diol stmcture, making this glycol highly reactive as a chemical intermediate. The gem-A methy configuration is responsible for the exceptional hydrolytic, thermal, and uv stabiUty of neopentyl glycol derivatives. [Pg.371]

Secondary immunodeficiencies (9) are much more common than primary ones and frequently occur as a result of immaturity of the immune system in premature infants, immunosuppressive therapy, or surgery and trauma. Illnesses, particularly when prolonged and serious, have been associated with secondary immunodeficiencies, some of which may be reversible. Acquked immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) (10—12) may be considered a secondary immunodeficiency disease caused by the human immunodeficiency vimses HIV-1 or HIV-2. Hitherto unknown, the disease began to spread in the United States during the latter part of the 1970s. The agent responsible for this infection has been isolated and identified as a retrovims. [Pg.32]
