Occupational hygienist

Industrial hygenists are professionals and belong to an active association, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), which has chapters throughout the United States. 

While they may be important, these other functions are not the same as safety, as is often believed. They may have commonalities, but they do not demand the specific skills called for by the safety profession. The safety professional is constantly challenged with demands that require specialized skills, and adding other functions to their burden can render them almost ineffective.

The aim of the society is to promote and to stimulate the quality of the profession of the occupational hygienist, to promote the science of occupational hygiene and to raise awareness of the speciality of occupational hygiene. 

BIOH is the professional body for occupational hygiene in Great Britain and ensures that its occupational hygienists are proficient and ethical in their actions.

The big boost for reform came, in fact, with the Factory Acts in England. Three such acts were passed between 1833 and 1867, and they did much to improve working conditions and, in particular, initiated the training and use of Factory Inspectors to ensure that the provisions of the acts were implemented. These factory inspectors grew into the labor inspectors, safety officers, and occupational hygienists of today.

Qualitative information on exposure can be obtained from study subjects using questionnaires or interviews. Experts such as occupational hygienists can evaluate the exposure by walk-through surveys, detailed workplace investigations using validated checklists or judgements based on their experience.

An alternative approach therefore would be one in which there was greater specialist support for employers, including those in small firms, who are significant users of hazardous chemicals. This would probably require the implementation of some elements of a more European approach to external prevention services.
