Pumping systems Centrifugal pumps

Whereas the total dynamic head developed by a centrifugal, mixed-flow, or axial-flow pump is uniquely determined for any given flow by the speed at whicdi it rotates, positive-displacement pumps and those which approach positive displacement will ideally produce whatever head is impressed upon them by the system restrictions to flow. Actually with slippage neglecTed, the maximum head attainable is determined by the power available in the drive and the strength of the pump parts. An automatic relief valve set to open at a safe pressure... [Pg.909]

The thermocycle system can be operated only when condensing water is available at a temperature lower than the required chilled-water-supply temperature. Modifications for a centrifugal refrigeration unit include the installation of a small liqmd-refrigerant pump, cooler spray header nozzles, and a vapor bypass line between the cooler and the condenser. Without the compressor operating, a thermocycle capacity up to 35 percent of the refrigeration-unit rating can be produced. [Pg.1167]

In the liquid-hquid extraction area, in the mining industry, coming out of the leach tanks is normally a slurry, in which the desired mineral is dissolved in the liquid phase. To save the expense of separation, usually by filtration or centrifugation, attempts have been made to use a resident pump extraction system in which the organic material is contacted directly with the slurry. The main economic disadvantage to this proposed system is the fact that considerable amounts of organic liquid are entrained in the aqueous slurry system, which, after the extraction is complete, is discarded. In many systems this has caused an economic loss of solvent into this waste stream. [Pg.1640]

Gas pressurized Monitor tank level and provide interlock for feed feed shut-off overpressurizes, alternate fluid delivery system (e.g., pump) centrifuge system when feed vessel delivery gas pressure to maximum safe empties working pressure of downstream system (e.g., pressure regulation) Restrict feed flow rate to be consistent with vent capacity Ensure adequate vent capacity for maximum possible gas flow ... [Pg.64]

This system requires a pump with a best effieieney point (BFP) of 94 feet at 300 gallons per minute. If this is a eonventional industrial centrifugal pump with a BFiP of 94 feet, the shut-off head should be approximately 110 feet. And if the motor is a standard NFMA four pole motor spinning at about 1800 rpm, the diameter of the impeller should be approximately 10.5 inehes. If this pump were bought off the shelf from local distributor stock, it would probably be a 3 x 4 x 12 model end-suction centrifugal back pullout pump with the impeller machined to about 10.5 inches before installing the pump into the. system. And that s the way it is done. [Pg.106]

Actually, everything we said about bearings, mechanical seals, piping, TDH, system curves and mating the pump curve to the system curve, the affinity laws, cavitation, horsepower and efficiency arc as applicable to PD pumps as centrifugal pumps. [Pg.230]

The pumps can be either centrifugal or positive displacement types. The centrifugal pumps should have a head curve continuously rising toward the shut-off point. The standby pump should be piped into the system in a manner that permits checking of the pump while the main pump is in operation. To achieve this, a restriction orifice is required with a test bleeder valve piped to the return oil line or the reservoir. [Pg.545]

The fuel. skid. This could contain a gas compressor if the fuel gas pressure is low and a knockout drum for any liquid contamination that the gas may have. The requirement of fuel gas pressure is that it should be operated at a minimum of 50-70 psi (3.5-4.83 Bar) above the compressor discharge pressure. The compressor and its motor drive fall under the drive level hierarchy. In the case of liquid fuels, the skid may also contain a fuel treatment plant, which would have centrifuges, electrostatic precipitators, fuel additive pumps, and other equipment. These could be directly controlled by the D-CS system, which would then report its readiness to the gas turbine controller. [Pg.638]

As the flow rate and quantity of liquor are the most important controllable variables in developing design data, a feed pump suitable for accurate and continuous flow is required. Depending on the size of the pilot column system, the use of peristaltic, diaphragm, piston-type or centrifugal pumps are recommended. The feed pump should be used in combination with a volumetric or gravimetric flow control... [Pg.431]

The final element of the equipment description is the equipment boundary figure. A boundary figure is included with each data cell to define the components and limits of the equipment associated with that cell. For example, the data cell boundary figure (Data cell 3.3.7.2.1.1) in Figure 3.2 shows that the centrifugal pump, seal system, motor, motor control unit, lube oil system, coupling, and transmission are all components of the equipment in the data cell. The equipment boundary is inherently reflected in the taxonomy number. [Pg.17]

Data from an existing collection system were analyzed for failure modes and distribution. The results of Pareto analyses indicate the principal causes of failure. A few values of mean times to maintenance action (MTBM) are given for ethylene plant pumps (85 electric driven centrifugal pumps over a 19-month period), and ethylbenzene-styrene monomer plant equipment from 10 months data 4 gas compressors, 3 screw conveyors, 121 pumps, and 235 other items... [Pg.46]

Most induction ac motors are fixed-speed. However, a large number of motor applications would benefit if the motor speed could be adjusted to match process requirements. Motor speed controls are the devices which, when properly applied, can tap most of the potential energy savings in motor systems. Motor speed controls are particularly attractive in applications where there is variable fluid flow. In many centrifugal pump, fan, and compressor applications mechanical power grows roughly with the cube of the fluid flow. To move 80 percent of the nominal flow only half of the power is required. Centrifugal loads are therefore excellent candidates for motor speed control. Other loads that may benefit from the use of motor speed controls include conveyers, traction drives, winders, machine tools and robotics. [Pg.302]

The system of Figure 2-27 consists of 125 feet of unknown size schedule 40 steel pipe on the discharge side of a centrifugal pump. The flow rate is 500 gallons per minute at 7o°F. Although the tank is located above the pump, note that this elevation difference does not enter into the pipe size-friction drop calculations. How ever it will become a part of selection of the pump for the serrice (see Chapter 3). For quick estimate follow these steps ... [Pg.96]

The centrifugal pump is a versatile unit in the process plant, since its ease of control, non-pulsing flow, pressure limiting operation fits many small and large flow systems. [Pg.173]

Cavitation of a centrifugal pump, or any pump, develops when there is insufficient NPSH for the liquid to flow into the inlet of the pump, allowing flashing or bubble formation in the suction system and entrance to the pump. Each pump design or family of dimensional features related to the inlet and impeller eye area and entrance pattern requires a specific minimum value of NPSH to operate satisfactorily without flashing, cavitating, and loss of suction flowt... [Pg.189]
